JOB TITLE: WIDE AREA NETWORK ENGINEER

DEPARTMENT: Instructional Technology Department

FLSA: Non-exempt

REPORTS TO: Director of Technology

SUPERVISES: None

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months

QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of a four-year degree in Computer Science EngineeringInformation Systems

or a related field with coursework in networkingand two years of network experience including wide area networks andsupervisory training or experience; or

Associates Degree in Computer Science or related field two years

experience in a wide area network environment supervisory training or

experience; or

Any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge of networking protocols experience in routed and frame

relay network environments experience with network management

utilities

Certification in network operating systems software such as Novell

Administrator Novell Engineer or Microsoft Engineer or other

appropriate hardware certifications such as Cisco or

Any equivalent combination of training certification and/or

experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities

NATURE OF WORK: The Wide Area Network (WAN) Analyst is responsible for designing and implementing wide area networks in a local school agency. Employee supervises the installation maintenance and operation of a wide area network and associated computer hardware and software. Employee coordinates with the Director of Instructional Technology and Coordinator of Technology Services the evaluation of school system networking needs and recommends improvements and modifications to existing infrastructure. Employee diagnoses and resolves complex wide and local area network issues.

1. Designs and implements wide area networks including network firewall switches routers wireless access points and other peripheral devices.
2. Installs and configures all necessary networking devices.
3. Acts as a backup for maintenance of telecommunications infrastructure.
4. Operates and maintains wide area networks tracks significant problems monitors performance and performs upgrades to hardware and software as required.
5. Installs or modifies existing installations of networked computer hardware software and other components.
6. Manages design cleanliness and capacity of physical networking equipment and cabling infrastructure.
7. Ensures the safety of users and equipment including compliance with fire codes.
8. Maintains accurate and current inventory and documentation.
9. Participates in long- and short-range technology planning.
10. Trains technical staff at the system and building level to follow proper operating procedures necessary to maintain the integrity of the network.
11. Maintains documentation regarding network configurations operating procedures and service records relating to network hardware and software.
12. Collaborates with Technology Support Analyst to support end-user devices.
13. Collaborates with Network Services Engineer to plan and design adequate network infrastructure.
14. Provides training for staff as appropriate.
15. Seeks and participates in opportunities for professional growth.

PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Wide Area Network Engineer job classification within the Bertie County Schools.

Work in this classification is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to:

• Walk lift reach stoop sit squat bend stand grasp balance climb kneel crouch and type for extended periods of time up to 10 hours
• Prepare read comprehend and analyze a variety of complex forms reports spreadsheets maps plans records documentation and correspondence in all languages required by the job
• Speak to individuals or groups of people with poise voice control and confidence
• Respond adequately to inquiries or complaints
• Write using standard convention in all languages required by the job
• Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions
