About an Apprenticeship at STFC

Were looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals ready to develop their skills through formal training and hands-on experience. As an apprentice youll gain real-world experience build technical and professional skills and contribute to cutting-edge research and innovation in a dynamic supportive environment.

Youllbe based in the RAL Space department working alongside experienced IT professionals who support some of the most exciting and innovative projects in UK Space Science. Yourmain rolewill be within the IT Helpdesk team whereyoullhandle a wide variety of support requests and get a genuine insight into how IT underpins the work of engineersscientistsand operational staff across the practical skills learn how large-scale systems arerun and become a key part of a friendly and supportive team.

Werelooking for an apprentice with strong interpersonal skills the ability to work well in a team and a proactive can-do approach to solving problems. Some basic IT knowledge is helpful but not essential enthusiasmcuriosityand a willingness to learn are what matter most.

What Youll Be Doing Day-to-day responsibilities

  • Providing first-line support to users in person over the phone and via email helping staff resolve everyday IT issues.
  • Getting involved in new and ongoing IT projects giving you the chance to contribute and learn fromreal technicalwork.
  • Using our ticketing system to investigate and troubleshoot softwarehardwareand networking problems.
  • Installing and upgrading PCs and laptops as part of our hardware refresh and support activities.
  • Assistingwith onboarding new starters helping them get set up and ready to work from day one.
  • Offeringgeneral supportacross Windows Mac mobiledevicesand printers giving you a broad foundation across multiple platforms.

Entry Requirements

The below criteria will be scored during Shortlisting (S) Interview (I) or both (S&I).

We are looking for the following:

Essential

  • GCSEs in Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above) (S)
  • An awareness of basic health and safety (I)
  • Enthusiastic and motivated to learn both in the workplace and through formal training (I)
  • Excellent communication skills asdemonstratedin your CV covering letter and interview (S&I)
  • Demonstrable knowledge of - or enthusiasm for various aspects of computing. Your CV and cover letter should give example(s) of any personal school or work-based projects that involved learning about and using IT and/or hardware and what you enjoyed (S&I)
  • A team playerwhosalso confident working independently(S&I)
  • Good at keeping things on track and getting tasks done on time(S&I)
  • Enjoys solving problems thinking things through andcoming up withideas that work(I)

Desirable

  • Some knowledge of PC/Mac computer hardware (I)
  • Some knowledge of Microsoft Desktop Products (I)
  • Some knowledge of Apple products (I)
  • Some knowledge of Smartphones (I)

Important Information

  • To complete the apprenticeship you will need to evidence passes at 9-4 or A*-C in GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English. For those sitting their GSCEs in Summer 2026 we would need evidence of your predicted grades.
