Job Summary:

The Department of Surgery is seeking an experienced research professional to support solid organ transplant your pivotal role as Clinical Research Coordinator you will perform a variety of research and operations-related activities for a federally funded small pilot clinical trial. This will include study participant recruitment study visit completion and data acquisition management and reporting. This full-time position (40 hours/week) is available for up to two years.

Your responsibilities will include: Reviewing potential candidates in the electronic medical record (EPIC) contacting candidates via phone and/or the patient communication portal and setting up/conducting enrollment visits including patient consent and survey completion. At the enrollment visit you will also be responsible for downloading an app to the participants phone and registering the participant for an account within the app. Subsequent study visits include weekly phone-calls with participants and a study exit visit where you will administer surveys and conduct a brief semi-structured exit interview. You will be responsible for data collection and management in REDCap including data extraction from the electronic health record (EPIC). Other tasks include clinical trials regulatory and safety mechanisms including maintaining the IRB organizing a data safety and monitoring board reporting results in the national NIMH Data Archive (NDA) database drafting annual update reports for NIH and maintaining the record.

Depending on the time requirements for the primary pilot trial additional tasks will revolve around assisting with other divisional research projects which could include but not be limited to conducting literature reviews data analysis and preparing results for publication. Potential for authorship depends on degree of study involvement and manuscript contribution. The responsibilities listed are a general overview of the position and additional duties may be assigned.

At minimum you must have completed a bachelors degree ideally in health-related or social science fields. Ideally you will have experience in clinical research in the past.

You will work Monday-Friday standard daytime business hours at Vanderbilt Medical Center North on 21st Ave.

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

The Vanderbilt Division of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation is one of the oldest and most experienced kidney transplant programs in the United States having performed over 6000 transplants since its inception in 1962. We are currently the third largest kidney transplant program in the Southeast. Surgeons perform cadaver and living donor kidney transplants simultaneous kidney/pancreas transplants and pancreas transplants alone. The Division was also the first transplant program in Tennessee to introduce the minimally invasive technique of laparoscopic donor nephrectomy for living donor kidney transplants and now performs the largest number of living donor kidney transplants in the state.   • Coordinates research projects and performs tasks related to the execution and operations of research projects.
  • Plans organizes and completes projects in an efficient manner.
  • Fosters collaboration between team members both internal and external to the department/institution. Works as a team to accomplish common goals.
  • Build REDCap database and performs data entry. Coordinates data management data cleaning and data validation.
  • Administers surveys and conducts brief semi-structured interviews.
  • Downloads smartphone application to participant phone and troubleshoots the app use.
  • Speaks with participants on the phone for weekly check-ins.
  • Contributes to literature reviews and peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts (authorship potential).
  • Actively identifies and participates in educational and developmental activities to improve knowledge and performance to sustain and enhance personal and departmental development.
  • Communicates and models values and mission of VU/VUMC.
  • Follows Good Clinical Practices and all relevant current local state and federal laws regulations guidance policies and procedures developed by the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Institutional Review Board.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a bachelors or higher degree in a major such as social or health science or related.
  • Must complete VUMCs IRB CITI and Good Clinical Practices (GCP) training before interacting with any participants & must re-certify every 3 years.
  • Must complete E-Star (EPIC) and REDCap training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of research experience in social or health sciences.
  • Prior experience with qualitative research including survey administration performing semi-structured interviews coding transcribed interviews.
  • Familiarity with Health Services Research.
  • Recognizes areas of responsibility and performs expected and unexpected tasks.
  • Willingly exerts extra effort when necessary to get the job done.
  • Takes ownership of problems brought to their attention. Follows through from analysis to problem resolution. Takes responsibility for mistakes and learns from them.

  • Tech savvy and able to download a smartphone application register a user and troubleshoot any problems.

Preferred Competencies

  • Ability to rapidly learn and become proficient with new computer applications (prior experience with an electronic medical record and/or REDCap is a nice plus but not required).
  • Experience with obtaining informed consent from study participants.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with writing data reports manuscripts and research grants.
  • Interest in organ transplantation addictions and digital health applications.
