Job Description:
AManager of Automobile Service (HEMM)oversees the maintenance repair and operational efficiency of a fleet of Heavy Earth Moving Machinery primarily in industries like mining or construction. This role requires a blend of management expertise strong technical knowledge of heavy diesel equipment and a commitment to safety and productivity.
Key Responsibilities
- Operations Management: Plan organize and supervise all workshop activities to ensure timely and high-quality servicing and repairs of all HEMM equipment. This includes managing daily maintenance schedules prioritizing repair jobs and monitoring workflow.
- Maintenance & Repair: Oversee breakdown maintenance including major overhauls (e.g. engine overhauls) and ensure preventative maintenance (PM) schedules are strictly followed to minimize equipment downtime.
- Team Leadership: Hire train motivate and manage a team of HEMM mechanics and support staff. Conduct performance reviews and identify training opportunities to address skill gaps.
- Inventory & Budget Management: Manage the department budget control costs monitor inventory levels of spare parts and tools and coordinate parts orders with the parts department.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure all operations comply with federal state and local regulations including safety guidelines (e.g. OSHA standards) and environmental laws.
- Problem-Solving & Quality Control: Diagnose complex problems conduct quality checks of completed work and implement strategies to improve efficiency and service delivery.
- Record Keeping: Maintain detailed service logs records of maintenance performed on vehicles/equipment and prepare reports for senior management on department performance and key metrics.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Education: A bachelors degree in automotive technology mechanical engineering business administration or a related field is often preferred though extensive relevant experience can substitute.
- Experience: Substantial experience in automotive service management specifically in the maintenance of heavy commercial vehicles construction equipment or HEMM is essential.
- Technical Knowledge: In-depth understanding of heavy diesel engines hydraulic systems air brake systems electrical controls and various repair techniques for HEMM.
- Core Competencies:
- Strong leadership problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent organizational and communication abilities.
- Proficiency with service management software and diagnostic tools.
- Financial acumen to manage budgets and control costs.
- Certifications: Relevant professional certifications such as those fromAutomotive Service Excellence (ASE)for heavy trucks or specific industry credentials (e.g. Accredited Automotive Manager) are highly advantageous.
