JOB SUMMARY:
Performs all duties in preparing fresh surgical tissue specimens for rapid examination by a pathologist in a timely manner with good lab practice. Also assists with preparation of direct smears from fine needle aspirates with good technique and proper labeling. Answers phone calls accurately files completed slides and assists pathologists with other duties as needed.
Position requires good judgment and decision-making skills ability to be a team player and ability to work independently. Employee must maintain a cooperative attitude and be supportive of on-going changes in the lab in a professional manner at all times. Upholds all policies and procedures of the contract institution as required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Tissue for Frozen sections
- Assists pathologists with frozen sectioning and staining in a prompt and efficient manner with good quality sections
- Properly labels and stains all frozen section slides and prepares for transport to PGL
- Assists with cleanup of frozen section cryostat and area re-stocking reagents/supplies as
needed - Properly documents all quality control as required
Lymphoma Protocol
- Set up specimen for the pathologist to gross and section for lab distribution
FNAs - Coordinates with endoscopy on the procedure.
- Receives slides following the procedure
- Performs H&E staining as required before turning out to pathologist
- Logs slides into logbook for transport to PGL
Renal Handling
- Assists with retrieving routine and pediatric renal specimens that have been collected and
properly alerting the pathologists if needed - Filing Completed Slides
- Assists with putting pathologist completed slides in order and filing and returning empty slide folders to histology
- Assists with slide rotation for long term storage
Filing Completed Slides
- Assists with putting pathologist completed slides in order and filing and returning empty slide folders to histology
- Assists with slide rotation for long term storage
Pathologist Slide Conferences & Weekly QA Review
- Accurately pulls and organizes slides for pathologists Tumor ENT etc. conferences and weekly QA review
Phone Calls
- Properly answers phone calls and assists callers as needed with a cooperative pleasant attitude
Miscellaneous
- Daily checks of the histo morgue for limb specimens and notifies PAs if necessary
- Daily checks for rejected specimens
- Daily printing of OR schedule for (S) path
- Weekly Inventories and requests all supplies as needed
- Handles sendouts of all Bone Marrow and Lymphoma specimens
- Maintains QC records for assigned station keeping cryostat in good clean condition
- Retrieve requested slides and/or blocks whenever needed
- Pulls slides for slide loan requests when received from PGL sendouts
- Works with pathologists and other OLOL team members to expedite requests and resolve issues in an efficient manner
- Assists with maintaining all grossing stations and frozen section rooms at OLOL Main and OLOL
- Childrens facilities daily and bi weekly keeping them clean stocked and organized
- Other duties as assigned by the histology managers/team leads pathologist assistants and
pathologists
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
One year medical experience (Required).
Bachelor of Science degree with one year of lab experience preferred.
Knowledge in medical field is preferred.
Must be able to adapt to changes in work schedule.
Possess good analytical and problem solving skills adjusting priorities as work requirements
demand.
Must be able to perform multiple tasks correctly and simultaneously.
Must be able to work independently.
Must possess good verbal communication skills.
Must be able to work well with all others.
