BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT
Several factors (climate change pandemics conflicts etc.) exacerbate human suffering damaging livelihoods ecosystems and resources availability. Humanitarian actors are responsible to embed environmental sustainability in their interventions both in terms of reducing possible collateral damages (e.g. carbon emissions damage to ecosystems pollution) and leveraging interventions to improve the environmental systems in which theyre being implemented. Integrating environmental sustainability into humanitarian operations is also associated with increased long-term efficiency effectiveness and resilience. Enhancing environmental sustainability and efficiency is essential to ensure the organization continues to deliver on its mandate and is accountable to the people it serves. WFPs value added is furthermore in the enabling of governments through capacity strengthening leveraging WFPs extensive global operational and technical experience in food and other supply chain systems to strengthen national level supply chain systems.

Under the supervision of the ECODASH Project Lead the fellows will support projects relating to enhancing the WFPs ability to measure the environmental impact of supply chain operations and identify scope and plan opportunities for improvement. The output of the assignment aligns with the implementation of the 2024-2030 WFP Supply Chain Environmental Strategy connecting with the organizations strategic plan and cross-cutting indicators of Environmental Sustainability Innovation and Localization.

The felows are expected to have strong project management and analytical skills with experience and a passion for environmental sustainability being a considerable advantage. They will work with the Sustainable Supply Chain unit in Rome HQ as well as with technical officers in the selected Country Offices. They will also be responsible for coordinating across WFP divisions and building relationships with other entities working on impact measurement decarbonization and other environmental sustainability initiatives.

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Design and implement improvements to the way WFP measures environmental impacts and assesses the sustainability if its supply chain and food assistance operations with the support of the technical team.
2. Coordinate with and support Country Offices with assessment and analysis of sustainability opportunities compared with existing operations.
3. Research and build out WFP supply chains decarbonization roadmap in line with its prospective target commitments and available resources technology and funding outlook.
4. Support the development and rollout of frameworks guidelines and tools (e.g. ECODASH) for monitoring and reporting environmental impacts.
5. Document lessons learned and best practices for consistently assessing the environmental impact of key operational decisions and evaluating best course of action.
6. Build and maintain relationships with internal WFP divisions and external partners (governments UN agencies NGOs private sector) to ensure alignment and collaboration.
7. Provide technical assistance and training to HQ units Regional and Country Offices on using sustainability information to help guide their strategic and day-to-day decision-making.
8. Contribute to the refinement of WFPs Supply Chain Environmental Strategy and related policies.
DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT
1. Support implementation improvements to the way WFP measures environmental impacts and assesses the sustainability if its supply chain and food assistance operations.
2. Detailed roadmap for in line with its prospective target commitments and available resources technology and funding outlook
3. Provide support to a minimum of five country offices with assessment and analysis of sustainability opportunities compared with existing operations with a defined route forward.
4. Support establishing partnerships with key stakeholders and delivering training materials and sessions internally and externally to strengthen capacity on sustainable practices.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education
Masters and PhD students or graduates researchers or professors (Please specify here the preferred fields of study) Industrial Engineering & Management


Experience Advanced academic knowledge or technical experience in (Please specify here the preferred fields of experience) project management food systems environmental sustainability and economic development


Knowledge & Skills environmental impact measurement and/or carbon accounting


Languages Fluency in English (Level C). Intermediate knowledge of any other official UN language (French Spanish Arabic Chinese Russian or Portuguese) is an asset. (Please specify here additional requirements at the duty station)
