High School Band Teacher

Guadalupe Centers Charter Schools (GCCS) serves more than 1600 students from PreK12 and is a free open-enrollment public charter school system located in Kansas City Missouri. Over 97% of our students identify as Latinx and many are bilingual or English learners. Our network includes Guadalupe Centers Elementary School Guadalupe Centers Middle School and Guadalupe Centers High School.

GCCS grew out of Guadalupe Centers educational programs part of the longest continuously operating agency serving the Latinx community in the United States since 1919. Reports To: Building Principal

Summary:

The High School Band Teacher will cultivate students understanding and appreciation of instrumental music; teach techniques for band performance; develop individual and ensemble musicianship; and foster students talents and skills in instrumental music. The teacher will guide students in listening performing and reading music while supporting a comprehensive high school band program.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Create a safe positive and engaging classroom and rehearsal environment that supports learning and musical growth.

  • Teach knowledge and skills in instrumental music including music appreciation music theory ensemble performance and related topics utilizing the district-approved curriculum.

  • Plan and implement a balanced band program organizing daily class time so preparation rehearsal and instruction are effectively accomplished within the allotted schedule.

  • Direct and manage high school band ensembles including concert band marching band pep band and small ensembles as applicable.

  • Prepare students for performances including concerts school events community performances and competitions.

  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to support differentiated learning and meet the needs of each student.

  • Participate in professional learning opportunities and maintain current knowledge of best practices in music education and band instruction.

  • Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits and timely completion of required tasks; attend all parent meetings and contribute to the development of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 Plans as needed.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement of professional practice cultural competence and the ability to meet the instructional needs of culturally and linguistically diverse learners.

  • Manage student behavior to promote a safe respectful and optimal learning environment.

  • Respond to emergencies as needed to ensure immediate student and staff safety.

  • Participate in curriculum development and related school-wide initiatives.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor to support student and program needs.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficiency in instrumental music and band direction.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.

  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-pressure situations.

  • Commitment to serving underrepresented and diverse student populations.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in Music Education or related field.

  • Missouri State Certification in Music (K12 or 912).

  • Bilingual ability: English required; Spanish preferred.

  • Experience working in an urban school setting preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of standing conducting and walking throughout school spaces.

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds (e.g. instruments equipment) as needed.

  • Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school performance spaces and off-site event locations.
