Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) is one of Irelands largest acute teaching and learning hospitals with adult psychiatric and age-related healthcare on one site. The Hospital has 450 inpatient adult beds 74 onsite day beds for Dialysis Oncology Infusion Haematology Cardiology Bone & Joint and minor surgery services. The Hospital also has a Day Surgery Centre located near the Hospital which has four theatres and 25 bays for elective surgery. There are an additional 61 offsite beds under its governance. The Hospital is staffed by over 3500 people with 64 different nationalities represented on the team.
The Hospital is a provider of local regional and national specialties. It is a designated trauma unit incorporating the National Pelvic and Acetabular Unit a national Urology Centre and the second largest provider of renal dialysis services in the country.


One of the two main academic teaching hospitals of Trinity College Dublin - TUH specialise in the training and professional development of staff in areas such as Medicine Nursing Health & Social Care Professionals Emergency Medicine and Surgery amongst many others. TUH is part of the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group which serves a population of over 1.2 million across seven counties.

purpose of the role:
1. Describe the deficit in access to interpretation within the TUH health system
2. Identify and pilot novel digital solutions for this

Tallaght University Hospital is the acute hospital serving one of the largest numbers of migrants including those seeking protection Ireland. They present with an increasing range of nationalities and languages spoken. Of the migrants seeking protection those with the most complex health needs are housed in this catchment area.

Migrants seeking international protection are a marginalised population experiencing health inequality. They often present late and in emergency to acute hospitals since they are unable to access healthcare by usual means. TUH serves 47 IPA (International protection applicant) Residential facilities and 80 BOTP (beneficiary of temporary protection) facilities with a total population of over 15000. There has been almost a 100% increase in international protection application between 2023 and 2024 (International Protection Office 2024).

For staff to provide safe and effective healthcare and for patients to have the best experience of healthcare communication is key.
Our healthcare staff need to access good quality medical interpreters in a timely fashion to suit our busy work environment.
Current access to interpretation services at TUH needs to be reviewed given the changing patient demographic. This is not just a problem at TUH but a novel problem across Ireland and the HSE related to large increase in immigration.

We aim to find a cost effective solution utilising technological innovation.


overview of role:
The successful candidate will be emplyoyed on a part time (0.5WTE) basis for 1 year to deliver this project.
This project will aim to include
  • Baseline study to describe the problem
  • Scoping project to identify novel digital solutions for interpretation to improve immediate access to good quality interpretation
  • Pilot study to test the novel digital solution(s) against current services available

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Work with key stakeholders at TUH to deliver the project
  2. Coordinate and conduct the study be able to work independently
  3. Apply academic rigour to the project
  4. Disseminate the study findings

General accountability:
  • Report to the Consultant in Inclusion Health at TUH




Qualifications & Experience required
Must have:
  • Have obtained at least Grade D3 in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate Examination (higher ordinary applied or vocational programmes) or equivalent
Or
  • Have passed an examination at the appropriate level within the QQI qualifications framework which can be assessed as being of a comparable to Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent or higher i.e. Fetac Level 5
Or
  • Have satisfactory relevant experience which encompasses demonstrable equivalent skills
And
  • 3 years relevant administration experience
  • Practical experience of use of computer packages to include Microsoft Office i.e. Word Excel Outlook PowerPoint and other related packages
  • Fluent command and understanding of the English language to include spoken and written word

Desirable:
  • Minimum of 1 years administration experience in Healthcare environment
  • Post-graduate academic qualifications ideally masters.
  • Experience in working in the field of interpretation/translation
  • Experience working in healthcare
  • Experience designing conducting analysing and disseminating research studies
  • Experience in research methodology
  • Practical experience of use of IT systems / packages
  • Fluent command and understanding of the English language to include spoken and written word

  • Remuneration is in accordance with the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales 1st August 2025.

  • The appointment is temporary part time (0.5 WTE) and pensionable.
  • The annual leave entitlement is 29 working days per year pro rata. The leave year runs from 1st April to the 31st of March each year.
  • Normal working hours are 17.5worked over 5 days. Your contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 8 am to 8 pm over 7 days to meet the requirements for extended day services in accordance with the terms of the Framework Agreement.
