In this Actuarial Consultant role you will evaluate bureau circulars conduct competitor research propose rate changes by state and product and quantify rate impacts. You will prepare and present rate change proposals to senior leaders in Pricing and Underwriting and will work closely with partners in Technology to coordinate and optimize rate implementation availability. You will also be responsible for identifying innovations and building new tools to improve the efficiency and accuracy of rate filings and communications.

For those candidates still sitting for exams you will participate in our Actuarial Education Program which provides competitive study support and exam raises.

This position works a hybrid schedule from a CNA Actuarial Hub Location including Chicago IL; Radnor PA; Warren NJ; New York City NY and Walnut Creek CA.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

  • Compiles data and prepares exhibits containing premium and claim statistics to state insurance departments bureaus and other regulatory agencies. Prepares error-free state filing forms exhibits memos and supporting materials for regulatory filings.
  • Keep abreast of leading market practices and driving innovation by developing rate impact analysis tools and other rate filing exhibits. Designs develops and maintains automated tools to streamline data extraction transformation and validation processes.
  • With little direction responds to regulatory agencies and bureaus questions and objections after performing analysis researching and/or gathering information from business partners. Makes recommendations to business partners to influence filing outcomes.
  • Prepares rate proposals (including relevant bureau circulars and competitor information) rate impact calculations and preliminary external rate level indications to influence pricing decisions. Presents recommendations to Underwriting partners and Actuarial leaders.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvement and automation within the filing workflow. Collaborates with actuarial compliance and IT teams to integrate new tools and technologies into existing systems.

May perform additional duties as assigned.

Manager or above.

Skills Knowledge & Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of insurance business functions statistical methods of analysis actuarial ratemaking methods regulatory reporting and industry practices.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise. Knowledge and understanding of data marts and applications.
  • Knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite and other business related software (SQL and VBA proficiency is a plus).
  • Strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of internal and external business partners.
  • Solid project management organization and planning skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNAs internal and external business partners sometimes influencing decisions.
  • Strong analytical critical thinking and problem-solving skills with the ability to effectively resolve moderately complex situations and issues. Ability to comprehend business data and metrics and to further articulate analyses of actuarial data within internal reports.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Mathematics Statistics or Actuarial Science or equivalent.
  • A minimum of four years of related work experience. SQL and VBA experience preferred.
  • Successfully completed at least three to five CAS exams. Candidates with Associateship are strongly preferred.

In Illinois/California/New York the average base pay range for an Actuarial Consultant is $97000 to $137500. Salary determinations are based on various factors including but not limited to relevant work experience skills certifications and location.

In certain jurisdictions CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this District of Columbia California Colorado Connecticut Illinois Maryland Massachusetts New York and Washington the national base pay range for this job level is $54000 to $103000 determinations are based on various factors including but not limited to relevant work experience skills certifications and location.
