Position Summary
Louisiana State University Health Science Center New Orleanss ( LSUHSC -NO) Cancer Center and School of Public Health ( SPH ) are seeking to expand the leadership team responsible for LSUHSC -NOs expanding cancer community outreach and engagement programs. LSUHSC -NO is pursuing National Cancer Institute ( NCI ) designation and will serve as the only NCI -designated Cancer Center for the state of Louisiana. The Cancer Centers executive home will be in New Orleans and will include campuses across the state that are active in cancer including the world renown Pennington Research Center Louisiana State University Baton Rouge where sentinel animal studies will be conducted through the states only Veterinary Medicine School and Louisiana State University Shreveport. LSUHSC -NO manages the states tumor registry which is award winning and provides data to scientists across the country. Based on the registrys recent analysis Louisiana continues to have high social determinants of health relative to other states and has one of the highest incidence and mortality rates for cancers. The state has both highly urbanized areas such as New Orleans and very rural areas which creates significant opportunities to work with different communities and conduct population studies that will be relevant across the NCI designated cancer center community. Currently the Community Outreach and Engagement ( COE ) program is recognized across the state for its state-supported screening programs a novel virtual nurse program smoking programs connected with a state policy prohibiting smoking in public places trusted partnerships with community organizations Federal Qualified Health Centers ( FQHC ) etc. and navigation to cancer clinical studies. The selected candidate will serve as the Deputy Associate Director of Community Outreach and Engagement ( COE ) and will be responsible for growing its programmatic breadth and depth across the country and building signature programs that can be adopted by peers around the country. The ultimate goal is to reduce the significant impact of cancer on communities throughout Louisiana while developing approaches that peers can use to reduce the cancer burden in their catchment areas. We are seeking candidates for an open rank faculty position in the Community Health Sciences and Policy Program ( CHSP ) with expertise in cancer and community outreach and engagement to grow our senior leadership overseeing our growing statewide COE program. Relevant experience within an NCI -designated Cancer Center is highly desirable. We are seeking candidates with a track record of experience and expertise in one or more of the following: (1) cancer community outreach and engagement program development implementation and evaluation; 2) community-based participatory research in cancer intervention; or (3) community capacity building in cancer prevention and early detection. The incumbent will work closely with the Associate Director of COE to develop programs to expand community outreach and engagement in cancer prevention screening treatment and facilitation of research relevant to the catchment areas cancer burden. The COE program consists of four major focus areas: prevention and control; research support; community engagement and education; and evaluation. The incumbent will serve as the team leader for the engagement and education component while helping to build out the other components to meet and exceed best practices among NCI -designated centers. Applicants must hold a doctorate degree. Preferred candidates will have a doctorate degree in public health community health social work or a related field. Applicants with a doctorate degree in a different field who have a masters or demonstrated experience in public or community health will also be considered for this position. Candidates being considered for this position must have experience in interdisciplinary research and a demonstrated record of developing and maintaining a highly recognized externally funded research or service portfolio in the areas of interest in addition to demonstrated interest in teaching and a commitment to public health. Candidates will be expected to establish independent externally funded research collaborate with other researchers advise and mentor students and post-doctoral fellows and teach students.
