Waythrough launched in October 2024 following the merger of Humankind and Richmond Fellowship. Our vision is to break down the barriers that stop people getting the support they need to live a life they value. We tackle poverty and disadvantage in communities through mental health drug and alcohol housing and related support.

We have almost 200 services around England and nearly 3500 amazing staff and volunteers who run them. Every year our services support around 125000 people.

As a Peer Mentor Volunteer for the BetterLives Service you will use your personal experience of recoveryor a strong understanding of the recovery journeyto support individuals affected by drug and alcohol use. You will act as a mentor motivator and positive role model for people accessing treatment and recovery services.

Your role is to empower and inspire service users to actively engage in their recovery and to help them build confidence resilience and skills that support long-term change. You will provide informal emotional support encouragement and practical information that enables people to make informed choices about their treatment and future.

This is a partnership between North London NHS Foundation Trust and Waythrough Charity.

Tasks may include:

  • Supporting and mentoring service users through treatment and into meaningful activities such as education training volunteering or employment.
  • Inspiring and encouraging individuals to move away from substance misuse and related harm toward a recovery-focused lifestyle.
  • Providing informal emotional support and empathy to those affected by drug and alcohol use.
  • Acting as a positive role model and promoting recovery within the service.
  • Advocating for service users and signposting them to other relevant services and sources of support.
  • Empowering individuals to engage fully in the Better Lives service and take ownership of their recovery.
  • Co-facilitating group sessions and structured recovery-based activities alongside staff.
  • Encouraging the development of personal social physical and intellectual skills in service users.
  • Participating in service promotion and outreach events to raise awareness of recovery services.
  • Attending training sessions and supervision meetings to maintain personal development and ensure safe effective practice.
  • To assist the service as a lived experience/volunteer panel member on interviews
  • To assist service users to attend rehab BetterLives and community appointments/activities
  • To meet and greet clients into the services and activities providing support where needed.
