Role Overview

An exciting opportunity has become available for a proactive compassionate and resilient Behaviour Mentor to join a high-achieving yet inclusive secondary school in Caversham Reading. This role is suited to individuals who are passionate about student wellbeing behaviour support and inclusive education and who want to play a key role in helping young people overcome personal and behavioural barriers to success.

As a Behaviour Mentor you will work closely with students who require additional support to manage their behaviour emotions and engagement with learning. Many of the pupils supported in this role are academically capable but struggle due to anxiety low self-esteem emotional regulation difficulties or social challenges. Your work will help bridge the gap between potential and performance.

This is a highly relational role that requires emotional intelligence consistency and the ability to build trust with students who may feel misunderstood or disconnected from education.


Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role

The primary purpose of the Behaviour Mentor is to promote positive behaviour emotional wellbeing and inclusion across the school. You will act as a key adult for identified students supporting them to remain engaged in education and to develop the social and emotional skills needed for long-term success.

Rather than responding to behaviour through punishment alone the school takes a preventative and restorative approach and Behaviour Mentors play a central role in this philosophy. You will help students understand the impact of their behaviour develop accountability and learn healthier ways of expressing emotions.


Key Responsibilities

As a Behaviour Mentor in Caversham your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing targeted 1:1 mentoring for students with behavioural or emotional needs

  • Delivering small group sessions focused on resilience emotional literacy confidence and social interaction

  • Supporting students in lessons to improve focus engagement and behaviour

  • Assisting pupils during unstructured times such as breaks lunch and movement between lessons

  • Supporting students during emotionally challenging moments and helping them self-regulate

  • De-escalating situations calmly using restorative and trauma-informed approaches

  • Supporting pupils returning to school following exclusion illness or emotional distress

  • Working collaboratively with teachers SENCOs pastoral staff and senior leaders

  • Contributing to behaviour plans wellbeing strategies and intervention reviews

  • Maintaining accurate records of behaviour incidents progress and outcomes

  • Acting as a positive role model at all times

Students You Will Support

Students requiring Behaviour Mentor support may:

  • Experience anxiety or emotional overwhelm

  • Display low-level disruption or withdrawal in lessons

  • Struggle with peer relationships or confidence

  • Have SEMH needs ADHD or attachment difficulties

  • Be at risk of disengagement or reduced attendance

Many of these pupils are highly capable but need additional emotional and behavioural guidance to thrive within a mainstream school environment.


Who This Role Is Ideal For

This role is particularly well-suited to individuals who:

  • Have experience working with young people in education youth work or care

  • Are patient reflective and emotionally resilient

  • Have strong communication and listening skills

  • Are confident working both independently and as part of a team

  • Are interested in careers in teaching psychology counselling or pastoral leadership

Graduates in psychology education or social sciences are strongly encouraged to apply as are experienced Behaviour Mentors seeking a supportive and progressive school environment.


Essential Requirements

  • Experience supporting children or young people

  • Ability to build positive professional relationships

  • Calm and consistent approach to behaviour management

  • Commitment to safeguarding and inclusion

  • Willingness to engage in ongoing training


Desirable Experience

  • School-based behaviour or pastoral experience

  • Knowledge of SEMH needs and emotional wellbeing strategies

  • Familiarity with restorative practices

  • Relevant qualifications or training
