Introduction:
This position is under the general supervision of the Department Chair of Math and Sciences and assists the department lab coordinators in covering all science labs in the Math and Sciences department.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Under the general supervision of the Department Chair of the Math and Sciences program and in collaboration with the lab coordinators assist with the effective and safe management coordination and operation of all science course laboratories.
  • Works collaboratively with faculty and lab coordinators to coordinate and provide lab experiments for science courses and undergraduate research.
  • Prepares stores and ultimately disposes of organic and inorganic chemical solutions which include hazardous materials such as acids bases organic solvents bacteriological and enzyme solutions preserved animal specimens etc.
  • Prepares the safe preparation of biological agents such as human and other pathogens (Salmonella E. coli Staphylococcus Streptococcus etc.) and bacteriological media and maintains the departmental collection of bacteria and molds.
  • Prepares sets up breaks down maintains and stores equipment instrumentation needed for lab experiments and lecturer demonstrations such as balances microscopes. Oxygen meters pH meters spectrophotometers oscilloscopes balances sensors laptops quadrats respirometers distillers etc.
  • Ensures the safe and orderly clean upkeep of the laboratories and equipment.
  • Ensures compliance with department college university state federal and other applicable agency policies procedures regulations and laws regarding laboratory safety such as OSHA EPA fire department and the Department of Agriculture. Biosafety Office and hazardous materials safety.
  • Ensures the maintenance and control of the inventory of laboratory equipment supplies and living organisms including proper labeling etc.
  • Ensures the safe and compliant disposal transport reporting and clean-up of chemicals biological growths and hazardous materials.
  • Ensures compliance with department college university state federal and other applicable agency policies procedures regulations and laws regarding laboratory safety such as OSHA EPA Fire Department Department of Agriculture UH Biosafety Office and UH Environmental Health and Safety Office.
  • Ensures the availability of emergency equipment such as first aid kits emergency lights safety shoes eye wishes MSDS spill supplies compliance with department college and university. state federal and other applicable agency policies procedures. regulations. and laws regarding laboratory safety such as OSHA EPA Fire Department Department of Agriculture Bio-safety Office and hazardous materials safety.
  • Identifies faulty lab equipment and initiates all steps of the repair process including identifying vendors to provide repairs preparing repair orders and ensuring payment.
  • Assists with the procurement process for the science laboratories to include delivery follow-ups returns and credits.
  • Assists faculty in the classroom related to laboratory equipment demonstrations and set-ups.
  • Keeps up to date with changes in fields and laws as they relate to compliance issues best practices. Procurement of equipment and supplies serves as a resource to faculty and other departments.
  • May work weekends and evenings as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in Biology Chemistry Medical Technology Biotechnology or Biochemistry.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the coordinating operating and maintaining science laboratories as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal state laws rules and regulations and theories and systems associated with coordinating operating and maintaining science laboratories.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience in coordinating operating and maintaining science laboratories; or equivalent education and training or experience.
  • Practical knowledge of and experience with methods material procedures and techniques used in coordinating and implementing science laboratory experiments.
  • Understands and carries out complex oral and written instructions and resolves problems through creative reasoning and logic as substantiated by professional reference.
  • Ability to lead train and supervise subordinate personnel manage work priorities and manage employee relations as substantiated by professional reference.
  • Ability to competently operate a personal computer to maintain comprehensive records and prepare routine written reports; Successful experience in working with faculty students sales representatives clerical staff and administrators.
