Job Summary

The Contemporary American Theater Festival at Shepherd University is welcoming applications for Scenic Artists. CATF a LORT D summer festival and leading producer of contemporary plays is dedicated to telling diverse stories and developing new American theater. The festival premieres or produces multiple plays per season in 3-4 venues. CATF is committed to supporting the unique needs of new work while fostering an environment of fun and company community. Located 90 minutes from DC CATF makes its home in one of Americas coolest small towns Shepherdstown WV.


CATFs Scenic Art Department consists of a Festival Charge Artist Assistant Charge Artist two Scenic Artists and two Scenic Art Interns who finish paint and produce scenery for the festivals six productions. Scenic Artists will work under the supervision of the Festival Charge Artist to assist in mixing paint creating samples and executing scenic techniques and treatments and may assist in leading or training the interns.

Applicants must be able to lift and carry 50lbs be comfortable working on ladders and lifts up to 20 tall enjoy working on teams and be comfortable assisting with the supervision of interns. Flexibility positivity the ability to take direction well and work independently are essential to success at CATF. Ideal candidates will be knowledgeable in realistic faux finishes 3D texturing staining and will have previous repertory and/or professional experience.


Position is seasonal from June 2 - July 12 (with a possible extension through early August which can be discussed during the interview). All staff and interns are provided free air-conditioned housing within walking distance of the theaters and workspaces (also air conditioned) 1-2 meals per day during tech and free use of university gym pool and laundry facilities.
