Special Education Aide - ASL Focus

Job Summary: Under the direction of the Assistant Principal and Special Education Coordinator assist certificated teachers in reinforcing instruction to individuals or small groups of students; monitor and report student progress; perform a variety of clerical duties in support of the academic program; other related duties as required. The Special Education Aide will support the instructional program for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students in an elementary school setting. This role requires the use of American Sign Language (ASL) and English on a continuing basis to facilitate communication between students staff and peers.
Duties and Responsibilities will include:
- Support and maintain classroom policies.
- Monitor and support scholars as needed; supervision supports needed for transitions or unstructured times such as recess as needed; direct activities for individuals or small groups of students to reinforce instruction as directed by the teacher.
- Assist in the distribution and collection of materials and in the administration and scoring of a variety of assignments and tests.
- Assist in the implementation of the IEP as directed.
- Perform routine clerical duties; operate equipment including computers and copy machines.
- Assist students by providing proper examples emotional support a friendly patient attitude and general guidance.
- Confer with teachers as needed concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
- Participate in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.
- May require assisting with students personal needs including toileting in conjunction with site nursing staff as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirement Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills using tact patience and courtesy.
- Strong record-keeping techniques.
- AA Degree 24-48 semester units of higher education in child development preferred
- Proficiency in ASL strongly preferred
