Applications are invited for appointment as Part-time Teaching Assistant in the Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC) under the School of Future Media (Ref.: 533832) to commence on January 1 2025 for 5 months with possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance and funding availability.
The JMSC is seeking a trained journalist to support an undergraduate course JMSC1012 a foundational news reporting and writing course.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct tutorials and practical sessions: Lead tutorials facilitate hands-on news reporting and writing exercises provide one-on-one coaching and support students in overcoming challenges and developing core skills introduced in lectures.
Grade and provide feedback: Assess student work using a collaborative grading system give constructive feedback and answer student queries about assignments and concepts.
Support course administration and management: Help manage update and organize course content and resources (including on Moodle)
Foster an inclusive and innovative environment: Contribute to a supportive learning atmosphere encourage engagement from students of diverse backgrounds and assist with organizing guest lectures newsroom visits or collaborative projects.
Maintain communication with instructors: Communicate regularly about student progress attend instructor meetings as needed flag classroom issues and stay current on journalism tools and industry developments.
Requirements
Bachelors degree or above in journalism and/or media studies
Professional experience as a journalist with a solid understanding of news gathering writing and reporting and the social media landscape
Strong command of written and spoken English
Proficiency in news journalism tools and techniques (e.g. content management systems newsroom software social media platforms and multimedia reporting tools).
Knowledge of other Asian languages and prior teaching experience are advantageous
Working Hours and Compensation
The position requires 18.5 hours per week with some flexibility in scheduling but relevant classes are held on Tuesday afternoons in the 2025-26 academic year.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience calculated on an hourly basis.
