The role entails commissioning and editing a range of fascinating stories. From technology giants such as Sony Samsung Huawei and TSMC to financial behemoths such as HSBC and Nomura; and from Indian billionaires such as Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani to the vast capital flows needed to recycle Chinas trade surplus stories from Asia have a global impact.

We have a network of experienced journalists in all the main regional centres. They have the contacts and the language skills to bring in scoops; the role of the companies and markets editor is to channel their energy to the most important subjects edit their work into compelling copy and commission analysis with the depth and subtlety that FT readers expect.

Increasingly we seek to hire and promote local reporters which strengthens our understanding and our network of contacts but also requires editors with the patience to support correspondents who are writing in their second language. Helping those reporters to understand what makes a story work for international readers is an important part of the role.

Your skills

The core skills for the role are commissioning and copy editing. You must have great story ideas and the confidence to make bold commissioning decisions which requires both a genuine interest in the topics that matter to business and some knowledge of Asia. We would like you to demonstrate both.

Strong news judgement and the ability to make quick decisive edits of breaking news stories are important as is the capability to work on longer pieces keeping the reader always in mind. Coming up with sharp snappy headlines is crucial to get our pieces read.

The Asia news desk is small but tight-knit. The candidate needs to be versatile happy to work within a team and willing to assist with editing other topics when necessary. The home page produced by Asia is what the FTs core readership in the UK and Europe see when they wake up in the morning. Aptitude and ideas for building stories out digitally would also help a great deal.

Please submit your application by the end of the day Wednesday December 10 2025.
