Role description:
As the Health Safety Wellbeing (HSW) Manager for Arcadis UK&I you will lead the development and implementation of a positive health safety and wellbeing culture across the UK&I business. This role is pivotal in ensuring that all HSW initiatives are fully aligned with the Arcadis global HSW strategy policies and vision while tailoring them to meet the specific needs of the UK&I region. You will be responsible for the continuous improvement of the Health Safety Wellbeing Management System ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and driving strategic initiatives that enhance health safety and wellbeing and physical security across all UK&I operations.
Role accountabilities:
The UK&I Health Safety Wellbeing (HSW) Manager reports to the Europe and UK&I Regional HSW Director with a dotted line into the UK Country Director. The UK Country Director holds the statutory duty to ensure suitable arrangements are in place for occupational health safety and wellbeing and discharges the day-to-day duties to the UK&I Health Safety Wellbeing Manager who together with their teams are responsible for providing competent advice assurance and support to enable the business to fulfill their statutory health safety and wellbeing duties. Flexibility in working hours is required to support global collaboration. The role will manage a team and collaborate closely with UK Board of Directors Country Leadership Quality and Environmental. While the role does not hold direct accountability for environment and quality they will act as the UK Board reporting line for these areas providing oversight and strategic input. This role will oversee physical and people security in alignment with global protocols.
Strategy Leadership & Culture
- Develop and execute the UK&I HSW strategy ensuring consistent implementation and alignment with global Arcadis direction and UK&I leadership priorities
- Champion a culture of personal accountability zero incidents (TRACK to 0) and proactive safety stewardship (If Not Me Then Who)
- Inspire leadership and staff engagement in HSW across all levels of the UK&I business
- Be a visible and credible thought leader on health safety and wellbeing representing Arcadis both internally and externally
- HSW Programs & Engagement
- Lead the design implementation and communication of HSW programs across UK&I operations aligned with global Arcadis HSW direction
- Deliver global and local HSW communication and engagement strategies including staff forums toolbox talks pulse surveys and feedback loops
- Promote awareness and understanding of HSW across the business.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with ISO 45001 ISO 45003 and all relevant UK&I legislation and standards through audits and legal register evaluations
- Oversee the risk assessment process to proactively identify evaluate and mitigate workplace hazards
- Oversee contractor and supply chain HSW management processes aligned with Arcadis and client standards
- Lead incident investigation and escalation processes ensuring timely reporting to authorities and internal stakeholders
- Manage crisis management business continuity and emergency response planning in country.
Performance Monitoring & Reporting
- Monitor HSW performance using digital platforms and data analytics; provide insights and recommendations to leadership
- Review data and metrics to identify trends corrective actions and areas for improvement
- Provide quarterly reports to the UK Board and attend UK Board meetings as required Physical & People Security
- Act as Silver Command for physical and personnel security incident escalation and response
- Oversee the team responsible for implementing physical and people security measures
- Ensure compliance with vetting protocols Read On/Read Off and external accreditations (IPSA FSC)
- Maintain security clearance to NSV-SC level with no caveats
- Works with the Global Infosec team to support physical and personnel security aspects of secure project delivery to meet client expectations.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Collaborate with HR Property FM Procurement and other functions to align cross-functional processes impacting HSW (induction stress management pregnancy etc.)
- Engage with clients and external stakeholders representing Arcadis UK&I in HSW matters audits certifications and client meetings
- Participate in industry forums consultancy networks and client-supported events to reinforce Arcadiss People First culture.
Continuous Improvement & Learning
- Provide expert input into Learning & Development initiatives related to health safety and wellbeing
- Influence and support business leaders in continuous improvement and stewardship of the HSW program
- Contribute to global HSW team initiatives to improve safety culture and awareness across Arcadis.
Inclusion Wellbeing & Social Value
- Champion inclusive HSW practices addressing the diverse needs of UK&I employees
- Lead wellbeing risk management aligned to ISO 45003 collaborating with HR and global teams
- Mentor and sponsor staff support community and social initiatives and integrate sustainability and social value into all HSW activities.
Team Leadership
- Manage and motivate direct reports (including HSW and Security teams) to meet team goals and objectives
- Promote staff engagement professional development and HSW stewardship throughout the organization.
Quality & Environment
- Act as the UK&I reporting line for Quality and Environment matters providing oversight and reporting without direct accountability.
Qualifications & Experience:
Key Qualifications and Professional Certifications
- Bachelors degree in occupational health & safety Environmental Science Engineering or related discipline
- Postgraduate qualification in Occupational Health Safety Risk Management or similar (desirable)
- NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
- Chartered Membership of IOSH
- Registered member of IIRSM (desirable).
Key Competencies
- Significant experience (8+years) in a professional HSW role with a minimum of 5 years in leadership preferably in large complex multi-site organizations
- Proven track record of managing HSW teams and delivering strategies at a national or regional level
- Experience with ISO 45001 implementation maintenance and certification processes
- Experience with ISO 45003 implementation (desirable)
- Demonstrable experience in incident investigation risk management and regulatory compliance in the UK&I
- Experience liaising with UK&I regulatory authorities (e.g. HSE) and managing statutory obligations
- In depth CDM knowledge
- In-depth knowledge of UK&I HSW legislation (Health and Safety at Work Act Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations etc.)
- Familiarity with security protocols relevant to physical and people security (e.g. vetting Read On/Read Off NSV-SC clearance)
- Competence in HSW management systems data analytics and digital reporting tools
- Strategic thinker with ability to align local and global objectives
- Excellent communication and influencing skills at all organizational levels including Board
- Experience managing and developing multidisciplinary teams
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills (internal and external/clients)
- Ability and willingness to travel nationally as required

- Eligibility for Security Clearance to at least NSV-SC (Security Check) level with no caveats
