Description

The City of Richmond Public Library seeks a dynamic enthusiastic and hardworking person to join its team as an Entry Level Library Technician. The incumbent will be a self-motivated individual who is a self-starter excellent communicator and listener team player problem solver and most importantly exudes exceptional customer service. The selected candidate will join a dynamic team of individuals focused on providing excellent prompt and accurate services to both external and internal customers while achieving the following mission: Inform Enrich Empower.

This position will require some days evenings and weekends (Saturday and Sunday) scheduling on a rotating basis.

Duties include but are not limited to

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO

  • Provides customer service
  • Performs circulation desk duties: Checks out materials for patrons processes returned materials issues updates and replaces library cards
  • Opens and closes registers rings up payments and purchases makes change for currency

collects money for fines and other fees and counts funds for reports

  • Answer phones sort mails and distributes them accordingly
  • Assists patrons with simple to complex requests such as pay for printing hands out headphones and returns collateral closes computer lab at the end of day
  • Maintains computer database to remove patron ID number
  • Shelves books and other materials in proper order; Sort and organizes library materials
  • Circulates library materials to customers
  • Assists patrons find materials or other pertinent information either online in-person or over the phone as well as anticipates patrons needs and makes material recommendations
  • Fields patrons inquiries
  • Promotes and coordinates library events such as childrens story time art-committee and other library programs and clubs
  • Creates displays flyers and other promotional materials
  • Participates in staff development and training when offered
  • Performs other related duties as assigned


This position is considered an Essential Personnel which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies critical or hazardous conditions or inclement weather.

Qualifications Special Certifications and Licenses

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

The incumbent has considerable knowledge of routine and advanced clerical and other support services to assist patrons with their needs. This individual is proficient in math and should be able to use the Dewey Decimal System. The incumbent is comfortable using computer software including Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel Publisher PowerPoint Outlook). The incumbent knows how to use the standard office equipment. The individual has knowledge of cash register procedures.

The individual can demonstrate skills on excellent customer service great interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills. Assist patrons find materials or other pertinent information either online in-person or over the phone as well as comfortable with opening and closing registers collect money for fines and other fees count funds for reports and ring up payments and purchases. The individual is able to train volunteers interns AARP and work-study students on library processes and procedures.

This individual can demonstrate the ability to promote and coordinate library events such as childrens story time art-committee and other programs and clubs. The individual is able to create displays flyers and other promotional materials.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of public library related support experience
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly talk hear see perform repetitive motions stand finger and walk; frequently reach grasp lift pull and push; and occasionally climb stoop crouch and feel. The working conditions may contain environmental terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties this classification is considered to be light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally up to 10 pounds of force frequently and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
