As a Horticulture Trainee within Councils Parks and Natural Areas Branch youll work alongside experienced horticulturalists maintaining parks gardens street plantings cemeteries beaches and foreshores. Youll gain hands-on skills work outdoors in a supportive team and complete a Certificate II in Horticulture while earning a wage.

About the Opportunity

As a Horticulture Trainee youll develop practical skills and experience in maintaining and improving the regions public spaces. Working under the guidance of qualified staff your duties may include:

  • Applying horticultural practices such as planting pruning weeding fertilising and propagating.
  • Maintaining garden beds landscape features and plant collections.
  • Operating light mechanical equipment (e.g. brush cutters hedge trimmers blowers spray equipment rotary hoes chainsaws).
  • Assisting with irrigation and drainage maintenance.
  • Performing general cleaning maintenance and repairs of park infrastructure.
  • Working safely on or near roads when required.
  • Supporting the broader horticulture team with daily tasks and seasonal priorities.
  • Completing structured training toward a nationally recognised qualification.

This traineeship offers valuable experience for those aspiring to careers in horticulture landscaping parks maintenance conservation or outdoor labouring environments.

About You

We are looking for motivated individuals who:

  • Have a genuine interest in horticulture and landscaping.
  • Are physically capable of performing outdoor manual labour including repetitive and strenuous tasks.
  • Have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Are enthusiastic about learning and developing new skills.
  • Can work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Can follow instructions and complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Hold a current C-Class driver licence or learner licence (highly regarded).
  • Have previous experience in outdoor labouring or gardening work (desired but not essential).
