Stone and Diamond Purchase Manager is responsible for sourcing evaluating and procuring stones and diamonds managing supplier relationships and ensuring quality and compliance with industry standards. Key duties include developing procurement strategies negotiating with vendors monitoring inventory and conducting market research to maintain cost-effectiveness and ethical sourcing. This role requires strong analytical skills to assess the 4Cs of diamonds (cut color clarity carat) verify certifications and ensure all purchases meet the companys quality and ethical standards.
Core responsibilities
Quality evaluation: Assess the quality of diamonds and gemstones based on the 4Cs color clarity and cut ensuring they meet company standards.
Supplier management: Identify evaluate and select reliable suppliers based on quality cost and ethical standards. Manage and maintain positive long-term relationships with vendors.
Negotiation and contracts: Negotiate prices terms and contracts with suppliers to achieve the best possible agreements for the company.
Procurement strategy: Develop and implement purchasing strategies to optimize costs and enhance the supply chain.
Inventory control: Monitor stock levels analyze demand patterns and manage inventory to avoid shortages or excesses.
Market analysis: Stay updated on industry trends market fluctuations and supplier capabilities through continuous research.
Compliance and ethics: Ensure all purchases comply with legal ethical and internal standards including verifying certifications (e.g. GIA IGI) and handling import/export procedures if necessary.
Internal coordination: Collaborate with internal departments such as sales and design to understand their needs and align procurement activities accordingly.
Budget and cost management: Control the purchasing budget and devise cost-saving plans.
Required skills and qualifications
In-depth knowledge of diamond and gemstone grading (the 4Cs etc.) and industry-standard certifications.
Strong analytical skills to evaluate data analyze costs and make informed decisions.
Negotiation and interpersonal skills to build strong relationships with suppliers and internal teams.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
Experience in inventory management and supply chain optimization is beneficial.
