Summary

What You Will Do

Working within a strong team environment and reporting to the Manager Safety the Occupational Hygienist/Safety Advisor is responsible for:

  • The planning development implementation and evaluation of occupational hygiene and heath and safety initiatives for the organization.
  • Using an evidence based approach acts as a resource and provides consultation research and educational support on occupational hygiene for the Occupational Health team managers and staff.
  • Working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders to implement and improve organization-wide systems programs and services to ensure the health safety and wellness needs of Providence Health Care (PHC) staff volunteers and physicians are met.

Education & Qualifications:

  • Master of Science degree in Occupational Hygiene or equivalent education
  • Three (3) to five (5) years recent related experience (in healthcare environment preferred) including experience with maintenance and highly sophisticated technical equipment and air systems asbestos abatement and construction projects and Radiation and/or Laser safety and demonstrated experience with WorkSafeBC issues and systems.
  • Registered member of appropriate professional organization (e.g. AIHA ACGIH).
  • Eligible for registration as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) and Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP).
  • Current valid Class V BC Drivers License and unrestricted access to a personal vehicle for business related purposes.
  • Experience working within health care settings is considered an asset.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation and the Workers Compensation Act.
  • Demonstrated ability to be collaborative receptive and flexible.
  • Proven facilitation skills.

Your Day to Day:

  • Plan implement deliver evaluate and continuously improve occupational hygiene and safety programs to meet or exceed regulatory requirements (WorkSafeBC City of Vancouver CSA/ANSI etc.).
  • Provide expert interpretation and advice on applicable health and safety regulations standards and best practices including intervention and prevention measures.
  • Develop standards guidelines and procedures for key areas such as preventative maintenance lockout fall protection chemical safety spill control accident investigation and workplace inspections.
  • Conduct exposure monitoring and risk assessments analyze results using statistical methods prepare technical reports and recommend effective control measures (engineering administrative PPE).
  • Participate in and support process redesign equipment decisions construction projects and chemical/waste management by providing occupational hygiene and safety input.
  • Foster collaborative working relationships with internal teams joint OH&S committees and external partners such as WorkSafeBC unions educational institutions and health and safety professionals.
  • Lead and support incident investigations workplace inspections and compliance monitoring providing reports recommendations and follow-up action plans to PHC leaders and stakeholders.
  • Develop and deliver training programs communication strategies and promotional materials to increase awareness and engagement in occupational hygiene and safety initiatives.
  • Represent PHC with regulatory bodies and act as a resource for specialized programs (e.g. Radiation Safety Officer Laser Safety Officer) while participating in committees research projects and special initiatives including SWITCH BC and Ministry of Health collaborations.
  • Perform other related duties to support the overall occupational hygiene and safety program.
