Description of the Position: (Purpose of the Position): Students work together with a faculty member on scholarly or artistic projects.
Project Title: Transcribing Early America
Faculty Mentor:Steve Hahn
Project Description: I am seeking a student with an interest in early American history who is willing to develop skills in 17th and 18th century paleography. The principal focus of this research is a 1722 English chancery court case between an alleged Jamaican pirate named Richard Tookerman and several of his London creditors. Our task is to transcribe the complaint depositions and answers of the parties involved in order to determine the state of Tookermans finances. Upon completion of that task we will transcribe documents from the British National Archive related to early America that I have collected over the years for classroom use. These include documents relating to piracy witchcraft imperial warfare and the slave trade. Dates: February 10-May 12 2026. Interested students should contact Professor Steven Hahn ()

Duties and Responsibilities:Each project has its own timing (number of hours per week and number of weeks) as determined by the individual faculty mentor. See theCURI Digital Olaf database for individual project descriptions and details.
Qualifications: (Education/Experience/Skills) A student interested in applying for the CURI academic year program must be enrolled as an on-campus St. Olaf student. There is no GPA requirement that must be met in order to apply for the program but a students academic record will be considered during the selection process. Skills are dependent on individual projects.
