Job Summary

Fabrication Specialist - Steel America
Purpose:
Steel America a business unit of Colonnas Shipyard is seeking a Fabrication Specialistto support operations at our site in Norfolk VA.
Job Description:
  • Conduct preventive maintenance to avoid unnecessary repairs and downtime
  • Fit and weld pipe and/or plate in the repair and/or construction of marine vessels and industrial components using gas welding brazing arc welding wire fed welding or tig welding process and procedures
  • Weld components in flat vertical or overhead positions and in all conditions
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as gas tungsten arc gas metal arc flux cored arc plasma arc shielded metal arc resistance welding and submerged arc welding
  • Monitor the fitting burning and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping shrinking distortion or expansion of material
  • Interpret blueprints specifications diagrams or schematics to determine appropriate welding processes
  • Comprehend and understand marine architectural blueprints. Must be able to determine information to fabricate erect and install ships structures foundations structural closures and outfitting items from blueprint.
  • Must be able to fit and weld
  • Exceed Journey Level standards
  • Perform Arc welding - SMAW FCAW GMAW SAW
  • Perform carbon arc gouging for weld preparation and cleanup
  • Fast and efficient in FCAW GMAW processes; SMAW TIG a plus
  • Proficient at welding carbon and stainless-steel plate and shapes
  • Proficient at welding in positions 1F 2F 3F 1G 2G and 3G
  • Anticipate needed parts and supplies disassemble equipment and parts fabricate parts when needed and reassemble equipment and parts
  • Assist in training helpers and lower skilled mechanics
  • Perform safety inspections of equipment and accessories
  • Perform visual inspections of welds and fit up
  • Complete standard computations relating to dimensions and maintaining tolerances and minimizing distortions
  • Weld together metal components of products as specified by layout blueprints diagram work order welding procedures or oral instructions using electric arc-welding equipment
  • Prepare all material surfaces to be welded ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale slag rust moisture grease or other foreign matter
  • Construct or repair metal products by joining parts either manually (using a variety of welding methods including electric arc MIG and TIG welding or oxy-acetylene welding) or by machine
  • Review welding operator qualifications
  • Troubleshoot welding procedures for necessary equipment and consumables
  • Introduce cost saving ideas
  • Reduce costs in welding processes while contributing to increased productivity
  • May perform experimental welding to evaluate new equipment techniques and materials
  • Perform multi-pass all position fillet and butt welds using SWAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) processes
  • Set up for shielded metal arc welding operations and base metal preparation on carbon steel
  • Perform single pass fillet welds V-groove welds all positions on carbon steel
  • Perform Manual Arc M.I.G. Fluxcore in all positions Submerged Arc- Automatic Semi- automatic and Manual Carbon Arc (Arc air) cutting weld
  • Interpret welding symbol information
  • Identify necessary external repairs to equipment and accessories
  • Equipment set up and operation for Flux-cored Shielded Metal Arc Gas Tungsten Arc and Air Carbon Arc welding operations
  • Set up and maintenance on welding equipment such as: wire feeders Sub-arc tractors Bug Os Power sources
  • Successful completion of mirror welding
  • Understand and act upon instruction / work independently to complete responsibilities
  • Must have regular reliable attendance
Qualifications:
  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to perform multi-pass all position fillet and butt welds using SWAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding)
  • Knowledge of welding techniques (oxygen-acetylene electric arc and TIG) tools and equipment
  • Ability to perform MIG TIG STICK and train other on all welding processes
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and fabricate from those prints
  • Welding on carbon steel stainless steel and other required surfaces and material; aluminum experience is a plus
  • Advanced knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trade
  • Must be able to work effectively with others
  • Comprehend blueprints sketches and templates.
  • Hands on experience with heavy metal/steel welding procedures in all positions
  • Minimum of 10 years of career experience in Welding
  • Must be able to comprehend and follow instructions
  • Must be able to multi-task and organize information and various assignments
  • Works well with peers
  • Tack weld in all metals
  • Mirror welding experience
  • Must be a steady reliable worker
  • Strong communication skills both written and oral
  • Expertise in welding power sources wire feeders welding consumables
  • Must have working knowledge of welding codes: AWS ASME MIL-STD AISC & ABS
Travel Requirements:
  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Security Requirements:
  • Position requires US Citizenship.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders work in extreme temperature environments aboard ships in shipyards under industrial conditions and in confined spaces including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat humidity noise and dirty conditions working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job you may frequently be required to stand walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and required to reach with hands and arms climb and balance stoop squat kneel twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding cutting or working with molten metal.
