Description

The Outreach Counselor provides counseling outreach and case management services to students faculty staff and the community. This position plays a vital role in the development of a campus environment where students mental health is supported for their success at the institution. The Outreach Counselor reports to the Director of the Counseling Center and is also directed by the Associate Director of the Counseling Center.



Responsibilities

Counseling Services

  • Conducts initial screening sessions (triage) and make recommendations for appropriate follow-up services
  • Provides ongoing support services such as counseling or psychoeducational interventions for students to facilitate readiness and success on the college campus thereby improving retention rates for all students particularly those at risk of dropping out
  • Offers consultation regarding on-going care and stabilization of students in crisis
  • Encourages student decision-making that can impact personal and academic success during matriculation and beyond

Administrative Services

  • Liaise with other departments as assigned
  • Serves as an alternate and ad hoc member of the Case Assessment Review and Evaluation (CARE) Team
  • Assists the Director with Clery Act data collection
  • Participates in search committees and staff hiring as needed

Outreach & Education

  • Educates and promotes mental health services to the campus community prospective students and families and alumni
  • Provides psychoeducation and mental health wellness information to designated groups
  • Manages outreach requests from campus and community partners and coordinates outreach events
  • Makes recommendations regarding expenditures for Counseling Center resources training and promotional materials
  • Researches and/or develops relevant staff trainings for approval by the Director

Case Management

  • Compiles and maintains a directory of referral sources for a variety of student needs (e.g. psychiatry counseling social services etc.)
  • Coordinates community referral drop-ins and update Counseling Center staff on changes to our community partnerships and referrals

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Working knowledge of nondiscrimination laws and compliance regulations including Title IX due process protections as they apply to Student Conduct proceedings the Clery Act and FERPA
  • Excellent judgment with the ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information
  • Strong skills in the areas of conflict resolution problem solving techniques and attentive listening skills
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess and negotiate complex highly sensitive situations
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to analyze information evaluate results and facilitate resolution of difficult challenges including the ability to handle complex issues of extreme sensitivity
  • Skill in writing concise logical analytical reports to convey complex issues
  • Strong and effective interpersonal skills; the ability to listen well and demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for individual needs
  • Ability to maintain neutrality and work under stress
  • Ability to adapt to evolving challenges and unique student needs
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional and productive working relationships with staff at all levels at the University
  • Ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (staff students faculty parents administrators) with diplomacy and tact
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals who may be in distress and/or handling difficult interactions
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills including interpersonal organizational and analytical skills
  • Excellent presentation and training skills
  • Flexibility with treatment planning and willingness to collaborate with internal and external colleagues to coordinate optimal wellness support

Qualifications

Minimum:Requires amasters degree in counseling psychology counselor education or social work; at least one year of experience working in a higher education setting non-profit organization community agency or K-12 school system as a counselor social worker or case manager; or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.

Preferred:Licensed as a professional counselor psychologist clinical social worker or marriage and family therapist; two or more years working in a higher education setting non-profit organization community agency or K-12 school system as a counselor social worker or case manager is preferred.
