Key Responsibilities:

Assist laboratory technologists in performing routine laboratory duties under supervision and according to clinical/laboratory procedure guidelines and work instructions:

1. Specimen reception and handling including sorting labeling registration of clinical specimens received; centrifuging and aliquoting plasma or serum from specimens; packaging specimens for dispatching; and assisting in test procedures such as sample preparation for sample analysis etc. (specimen may be infectious or radioactive) according to work schedule and rosters assigned.

2. Operate dumb waiter and be responsible for specimen triage and transport to designated laboratories according to schedule and instruction of department and divisions.

3. Prepare and record specimen bottles reagents cleaning agents and sterile items for laboratory use and perform filtering of reagents and stains to cope with operation need.

4. Preparation of disinfectant and perform routine laboratory work such as decontamination and disinfection of contaminated equipment instruments apparatus and utensils and cleaning of laboratory benches and observe safety guidelines.

5. Storage and filing of specimens e.g. blood urine stool sputum swab body fluids and other patient specimens including dried spot cards tissues and safe disposal of clinical and chemical wastes and comply with requirement of lab accreditation.

6. Need to operate simple equipment such as centrifuge water-bath dry bath laboratory hood biological safety cabinet electronic balance pre- and post- analytical system for sample handling under supervision of medical laboratory technicians or technologists.

7. Perform stock-keeping duties and replenishment of medical consumables to ensure a smooth operation e.g. stock taking and expiry date checking etc.

8. Perform and record manual handling works and collect materials/samples outside the department/hospital.

9. Perform and record regular and timely stock take of various types of reagent and consumables and checking of facilities safety device and personal protective equipment.

10. Answer or divert telephone enquiry from clinical units on laboratory operation and specimen collection and testing.

11. Monitor working and environmental conditions and alarms of storage equipment including but not limited to freezer and refrigerator. Record instrument data and ensure proper storage of samples and other goods after routine office hours.

12. Provide continuous site support in medical equipment maintenance and record keeping including routine maintenance and functional checking periodical preventive maintenance check and be responsible for equipment repair logistic procedure.

13. Work with irritant corrosive or inflammable chemicals including but not limited to formalin and alcohol.

14. Actively assist in the reception of blood products from Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service and support technical staff in handling specimen sorting and triage.

15. Handle patient samples collected from other HA clinics or hospitals.

16. Perform other relevant duties as assigned by supervisor.

Entry Requirements:

1. Completed F.5 / S.5 or equivalent;

2. Completed structured departmental training (See Remarks 2)

3. Good command of English and Chinese written and spoken.

Preferable Attributes /Exposure:

1.Good knowledge in computer operation and PC applications including MS Word Excel PowerPoint and other MS Office applications.

2. Passes in 5 subjects in HKCEE including English Language (Syllabus B) and Chinese Language and Mathematics; OR

5 subjects in HKDSE attaining the level specified below:

- Level 2 in English Language & Chinese Language & Mathematics; AND

- Level 2 in New Senior Secondary Subjects / Attained in Applied Learning subjects (subject to a maximum of 2 subjects under this category) / Grade E in other Language subjects.

3. Relevant experience in stock keeping and store management.

4. Working experience in clinical laboratory and with good discipline and be a team player.

5. Relevant health care or patient care related training experience.

6. Interested to work in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting and good time management.

7. Pleasant and mature with strong sense of responsibility.

8. Able to work independently under pressure with good interpersonal skills and communication skills.

2. Applicants who do not meet entry requirements (2) if find suitable will be employed to undergo at least 6 months on the job training including the structured departmental training. Employment may be terminated if the selected applicant cannot pass the assessment after training.
