Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive client-centred primary health care to the diverse UBC student population in accordance with UBC Student Health Service (SHS) standards of practice and the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM) standards. Working collaboratively within an interprofessional model the NP delivers care across a range of physical and mental health needs supports students with complex conditions and contributes to health promotion outreach education and quality improvement initiatives.

The NP demonstrates clinical leadership maintains and advances professional competence participates in committees and approved research projects related to campus health and wellness and integrates anti-racism equity diversity and inclusion principles into all aspects of care.



Organizational Status

Reports to the NP Lead Associate Director (AD) UBC Student Health Service. Works closely with family physicians specialists nurses clerical and administrative staff and collaborates with campus partners including Counselling Services Health Equity Promotion & Education the Centre for Accessibility and Student Support Services. The position is primarily based at Student Health Service with some work at other campus locations.


Work Performed

  • Provides primary health care to students through in-person and virtual visits working independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Assesses diagnoses treats and manages acute and chronic health conditions including mental health concerns.
  • Makes and coordinates appropriate internal and external referrals and ensures continuity and follow-up of care.
  • Collaborates with Counselling Services Wellness Advisers and the Centre for Accessibility regarding shared clients and accommodations.
  • Participates in on-call rotation for urgent or emergent medically related calls outside regular clinic hours.
  • Collaborates with campus partners on health promotion outreach and educational programming.
  • Participates in care planning for students with complex health needs and in collaborative case discussions.
  • Contributes to planning evaluation research and quality improvement initiatives related to student health services.
  • Participates in health-related committees and working groups.
  • Maintains accurate timely clinical documentation related to patient visits.
  • Acts as a student advocate promoting autonomy dignity privacy respect and access to information.
  • Maintains professional competence through continuing education in accordance with BCCNM requirements.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Under the supervision of the Medical Director of SHS this position is responsible for high quality care. Responsible for ensuring adherence to the standards of practice and patient care guidelines of UBC SHS. The result of failure to provide appropriate quality of care and referrals could result in serious harm to students with health conditions and legal accountability to the administrators of the University and/or damage to the due diligence reputation of the University.

Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the NP Lead AD and consults on complex or high-risk clinical matters. Collaborates with family physicians nurse practitioners nurses psychiatrists and other specialists as required.

Supervision Given
May provide work direction or assignments to staff as required.


Minimum Qualifications

- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives including perspectives in conflict with ones own
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing ones own awareness knowledge and skills related to equity diversity and inclusion

  • Masters degree in Nursing Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current registration in good standing with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM) as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Professional liability coverage with the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS)
  • Candidates must hold a valid BC Nurse Practitioner license and hold the valid requirements to legally work in British Columbia/Canada.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in acute or outpatient mental health settings or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.
  • Experience working in a post-secondary or other multicultural setting.
  • Strong knowledge of mental health assessment and diagnostic frameworks (e.g. DSM-5 and updates).
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation including the Mental Health Act Infants Act and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • Knowledge of adolescent and young adult health issues including mental health conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality primary care and culturally safe trauma-informed care.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse populations and an understanding of the impact of gender race disability gender identity sexuality and social context on health and wellbeing.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication (oral and written) organizational and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently collaboratively and adaptively in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Experience in health education health promotion committee work research and evaluation is an asset.
