SUMMARY:

May be assigned to patrol narcotics court process or criminal investigation work. Depending on area to which assigned may perform primarily undercover and surveillance work patrol work criminal process serving or investigative work. Assist Sergeants by ensuring that adequate and proper supervision is provided to all sworn and non-sworn members assigned to their areas. Perform Law Enforcement duties and responsibilities within DISD jurisdiction.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge skill and/or ability required.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or GED;
  • Bilingual is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Background in law enforcement;
  • Five years or more experience as a Full-time police officer preferred.

CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS

  • Applicant must possess a current Peace Officer Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE);
  • Applicant must have a current valid Texas operators drivers license; Must be able to be insured by the Donna ISD insurance carrier.
  • Intermediate certification in Law Enforcement.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions departmental policy rules regulations and laws;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Donna ISD employees and officials law enforcement agencies and the general public;
  • Ability to analyze situations and adopt a quick effective and reasonable course of action;
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports and to maintain complete records as required;
  • Ability to learn the use and care of vehicles firearms and specialized equipment;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Ability to speak read and write the English language;
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals;
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence;
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or organizations;
  • Ability to also speak and write in Spanish preferred;
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited information exists;
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instruction furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form;
  • Employee may be assigned other duties in addition to those listed; duties may change according to the changing needs of the School District.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Depending on the area of criminal enforcement to which assigned may perform any of the following duties:

  1. Patrol an assigned area generally by vehicle to prevent crimes and enforce laws and regulations;
  2. Respond to emergency calls routine complaints and take action as necessary;
  3. Direct traffic;
  4. Investigate traffic accidents that occur on school district property and respond to accidents involving school district vehicles off campus;

Investigate crimes against persons and property and assist federal state and local law enforcement;

  1. Keeps records of activities and make reports concerning crimes complaints and investigations;
  2. Files cases with district attorney;
  3. Make lawful arrests for violation of laws for the State of Texas and local government ordinance;
  4. Serve felony misdemeanor and mental commitment warrants and make arrests;
  5. Serve court papers including writs summons subpoenas capias etc;
  6. Questions witness and suspects and takes statements;
  7. Assist other law enforcement agencies as needed;
  8. Performs surveillance of suspects;
  9. Gather and label evidence take photographs and fingerprints guard & transport prisoners and testify in court;
  10. May address and work with community groups to promote good public relations and to inform citizens of police activities and crime prevention;
  11. Approve subordinates reports and insure subordinates complete their daily assigned duties;
  12. Download and save subordinates body camera video in a timely manner;
  13. Regular attendance is a must; 18.
  14. Ability to work well with others.
  15. Subject to division reassignment as determined by the Chief of Police or Superintendent;
  16. Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.

Consultation

  1. Work cooperatively with other agencies to share information and provide other assistance.

Safety

  1. Help provide traffic control at athletic events school closings or openings or at any other time;
  2. Assist the Transportation Department with problems at bus stop areas and/or chronic disruptions on school buses as requested;
  1. Provide protection to or escort district personnel as needed;
  2. Defuse potentially hostile situations;
  3. Operate all equipment including firearms according to established safety procedures;
  4. Conduct presentations for students and staff regarding safety and security;
  5. May address and work with community groups to promote good public relations and to inform citizens of Police activities and crime prevention.

Administration

  1. Compile maintain and file all reports and documents required including affidavits for arrest incident reports.

Other

  1. Must be familiar with Donna ISD policy and procedures;
  2. Must follow the Educators Code of Ethic
  3. Must maintain confidentiality;
  4. Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance;
  5. Participate in meetings and special events as assigned;
  6. Exercise professional judgment in absences; be punctual to work meetings and appointments;
  7. Subject to reassignment as determined by the Chief of Police or Superintendent;
  8. Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or immediate supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Will supervise personnel that have been placed in his/her charge;
  2. Will ensure that subordinate personnel in his/her charge carry out daily duties as defined by job descriptions policies and procedures level of responsibilities department goals and applicable federal and state laws;
  3. 40. Shall report both orally and in written form poor job performance violations of department policy and violations of federal and state laws involving any subordinate or officer of same or higher rank through established chain of command.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read analyze and interpret general business periodicals professional journals technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators teachers students parents and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to apply basic concepts of algebra and geometry. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts interest commissions proportions percentages area circumference and volume.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical diagram or schedule form and deal with several abstract and concrete variable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to stand walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to sit climb or balance run jump stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee may have to physically subdue and restrain uncooperative suspects prisoners and/or inmates.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds and in emergency situations lift persons with body weight ranging from 100 to 250 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
