The QC Lab Manager Role

The QC Lab Manager oversees the daily operations of the quality control laboratory to ensure all raw materials in-process samples and finished products meet established quality standards. The manager is responsible for leading the QC team maintaining laboratory equipment and driving continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality safety and compliance. This is a full-time salary exempt position. Standard work week is Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm. Business and lab staff needs may alter the work week and hours.

Laboratory operations and analysis

  • Supervise and lead the QC lab technicians ensuring all activities are performed accurately and efficiently.
  • Represent InChem on quality matters to customers and suppliers. Role is responsible for interfacing customers to ensure company meets expectations and specifications for quality of products.
  • Ensure the accuracy of analysis of raw materials in-process samples and finished products using various analytical techniques.
  • Lead investigations for corrective actions when there is a non-conforming product.
  • Ensure the timely and reliable release of product data to support production and shipment schedules.
  • Manage laboratory equipment including calibration maintenance troubleshooting and validation to ensure good working condition and data integrity.
  • Oversee cross-shift analytical performance to ensure consistent repeatable results by verifying technician alignment on methods calibration and sample handling.
  • Develop and maintain a structured communication process between QC and Production Operators / Supervisors to review and clarify any off-spec or questionable QC results before final reporting or release decisions are made.
  • Ensure timely feedback to Production Management when analytical results are out of specification or inconsistent facilitating joint troubleshooting and root cause investigation.

Quality and compliance

  • Develop implement and maintain quality control procedures test methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in accordance with industry and customer specifications.
  • Ensure full compliance with all relevant quality management systems (e.g. ISO 9001) and safety regulations (e.g. OSHAs chemical hygiene plan).
  • Lead and participate in internal and external audits by customers and regulatory agencies.
  • Review and approve quality documentation such as Certificates of Analysis (COAs).

Leadership and development

  • Recruit train mentor and evaluate the performance of QC laboratory staff.
  • Promote a strong safety and quality culture within the laboratory by enforcing standard procedures and leading by example.
  • Effectively communicate quality information metrics and procedures to staff and cross-functional teams including production and management.

Problem-solving and improvement

  • Participate in investigations into product non-conformance out-of-specification (OOS) results and customer complaints.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to resolve quality issues.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects to enhance laboratory productivity cost efficiency and accuracy.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in chemistry or a related scientific field. A masters degree is a plus.
  • Five or more years of experience in a QC laboratory within a chemical or manufacturing environment including a minimum of three years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Strong knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques and laboratory instrumentation.
  • Experience with quality management systems like ISO 9001 and methodologies such as Six Sigma is preferred.
