Who We Are

Launched in March 2013 the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center is the first and only facility dedicated to the study and rehabilitation of extremely fearful under-socialized dogs such as those confiscated from puppy mills and hoarding 2017 the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center (BRC) relocated to a new permanent and expanded facility in Weaverville North Carolina. The mission of the BRC is to share best practices develop structured behavior modification programs for other animal welfare organizations and assist with these programs implementation. Our ultimate goal is to maximize lifesaving impact through partnership and collaboration with shelter partners across the country.

What Youll Do

Under the direction of the Senior Director Operations the Manager Intake and Animal Transport works with internal and external partners to manage and carry-out all aspects of the Behavior Rehabilitation Centers program acceptance process. In addition this role will be responsible for the coordination and facilitation of all transports of dogs under the care of the Behavior Rehab Center. This may include transport to/from off-site medical services placement partner shelters new arrivals etc.

One of the most critical functions of this role is to serve as part of a harmonious united team with shelter operations shelter medicine and animal behavior experts. This united team is dedicated to collaborating with each other to provide balanced integrative care and to ensure all work supports the behavioral health of the dogs in treatment.


When & Where Youll Work

  • This position reports to the Behavioral Rehabilitation Center in Weaverville NC

  • Daily responsibilities include driving up to 8 hours per day 5 days per week

  • This position includes travel other locations deploying to the field or attending conferences up to 10% of the time

  • Available to work a flexible schedule including days evenings weekends and holidays. This role is currently set as Monday-Friday but some flexibility will be needed.

Compensation

Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors including but not limited to education training experience location business needs internal equity market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring salary range for this role is set forth below and may be modified in the future.

The target hiring range for this role is $26.25 - $28.25 hourly.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Functional Duties (70%)

  • Monitor all intake inquiries in a timely manner and oversee the BRCs candidate approval process working closely with the Senior Director of Behavior the Senior Director of Operations and the Senior Director of Medical to ensure that candidates meet all program inclusion criteria.

  • Act as main point of contact with source shelters throughout candidate approval wait list period and scheduled pick-up/arrival.

  • Schedule and coordinate physical intake of new dogs arriving for behavioral rehabilitation.

  • Safely and humanely transport dogs some of which are medically and/or behaviorally compromised to and from ASPCA facilities veterinary partners and partner shelters.

  • Coordinate all aspects of animal transport with sending and receiving partners including lining up alternate drivers as needed

  • Train staff from other departments to assist with transports including training on professional appearance maintaining clean and safe vehicles and safeguarding program assets and animals

  • Support all aspects of animal transportincluding but not limited to:partner relations and quality assurance animal readiness proper transport fleet oversight and maintenance appropriate animal handling transport schedule routes emergency preparedness etc.

  • Develop efficient tools to track and verify all aspects of safe and humane transport operations fleet/vehicle maintenance and driver training and retention

  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures across animal intake and transport programs

  • Participate in daily cross-shelter rounds sharing out incoming arrivals and outgoing transports and collaborating with BRC colleagues to monitor capacity and discuss incoming and outgoing transports.

  • Ensure proper cleaning and sanitizing of all transport crates and supplies between transports.

  • Collaborate with the veterinary team to ensure appropriate veterinary documentation is completed for all transports to ensure compliance with all state laws and organizational policies.

  • Oversee and track proper maintenance of program vehicles ensuring all fleet maintenance cleaning and inspections are current and properly logged

  • Train and oversee volunteers to assist with intake transport and fleet needs.

  • Serve as main contact person for management of transport inventory vehicle maintenance and asset logistics

  • Participate in ASPCA Fleet and driver development opportunities

  • Attend and participate in organization-wide workgroups and committees related to animal transport and vehicle requisition/disposition and maintenance

  • Participates in required trainings and actively pursues professional development

  • Maintain inventory of supplies in company vehicles to ensure the viability and safety of all transports

  • Perform other duties as assignedby Senior Director Operations.

Administrative & Leadership(30%)

  • Assist Operations Leadership team by participating as Manager on Duty for daily care team answering questions making timely operational and staffing adjustments offer and receive feedback lend a hand and ensure deep understanding and compliance with the BRCs daily operations

  • Facilitate ample and open communication within and across all teams

  • Directly and immediately address conflict and concerns as the arise ensuring difficult conversations are productive respectful and meaningful

  • Maintain the Behavior Rehabilitation Centers drivers list keeping it current and in compliance with the ASPCAs guidelines verifying all requirements are met for each driver

  • Attend and meaningfully contribute to all relevant BRC and ASPCA meetings

  • Assume financial accountability for an ASPCA credit card and work-related expenses; maintaining all receipts and preparing monthly expense reports

  • Understand and follow all ASPCA expense and travel policies

  • Accurately track and report time worked time off and work-related expenses

  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Operations

Education and Work Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required

  • Minimum of 2 years of program management experience required

  • 5 or more years driving experience required

  • Minimum 1-year experience in professional animal handing required

  • Experience in animal transportation or veterinary/animal shelter services preferred

  • Fear Free Shelter Program certification (approximately 5 hours) required or completed within 60 days of hire

Qualifications

  • Must provide a valid drivers license upon hire and pass a motor vehicle history check demonstrating a safe driving history. As part of the driving requirements of this role must also pass a Department of Transportation Medical Exam.

  • Comfort in driving a variety of types and sizes of vehicles including but not limited to cars SUVs vans trucks and cargo vans.

  • Demonstrated multi-tasker with an ability to prioritize

  • Fluent in the use of MS Word Excel PowerPoint; familiarity with shelter software systems or Salesforce a plus

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Comfortable with humane euthanasia in theory and in practice

  • Builds strong work relationships based on trust respect and listening to understand

  • Proactively problem-solves and takes appropriate initiative to implement solutions

  • Flexible; can easily adapt to changes and help others do the same

  • Ability to lift and carry animals (30-50 pounds unassisted 100 pounds with assistance) and equipment such as food bags crates bedding and cleaning supplies

  • Comfort and ability to handle and restrain animals safely and humanely particularly in stressful situations

  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment that requires standing walking bending squatting and/or kneeling for extended periods of time

  • Work may involve exposure to chemical and biological hazards such as medications cleaning products urine feces blood and sharp objects

  • Ability to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment including but not limited to disposable coveralls respirators or face masks and booties
