Assistant Professor

Journalism and Media Management

The Department of Journalism and Media Management at the University of Miami seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor whose research and teaching advance public-facing science communication journalism and media studies. We welcome candidates who can bridge journalism media and scientific disciplines and who are committed to interdisciplinary collaboration.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research in science health or environmental journalism or media studies with potential for obtaining external funding.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in journalism media studies and science communication.
  • Advise and mentor students. Consult with student climate journalism TV program.
  • Develop interdisciplinary curricula and minors supporting science majors seeking communication expertise.
  • Collaborate across university environmental health and science units.
  • Contribute to departmental school and university service.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Journalism Media Studies Communication or related field.
  • Demonstrated potential for scholarly research and publication.
  • Experience in journalism broadcast media media studies or science communication preferred.
  • Ability to teach and mentor students across majors.
  • Commitment to inclusive teaching and research.

We value a wide range of research approaches in journalism and media studies including those grounded in social science and interpretive traditions. We welcome scholarship that draws from interdisciplinary perspectives and engages with varied epistemologies and methodologies.

With more than 30 undergraduates currently combining journalism with science degrees established partnerships with the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science and a university-wide Climate Resilience Academy the Department and School of Communication are especially conducive to innovation in science journalism and media communication. Additionally with over 500 students graduating from the university annually in science-related majors the potential for growth in science journalism and media communication is substantial.
