Job Summary

Position Title: Director of Instruction

Pay Grade: A-6 Period of Employment: 12 months

Description Approved/ Revised: 6/2024 FLSA Status: Exempt

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Deputy Superintendent

General Responsibilities: Under the leadership of the Deputy Superintendent the Director of Instruction works collaboratively with division personnel school administrators and teachers to provide leadership regarding the development and improvement of the divisions instructional program.

Essential Duties:

  • Provides leadership and communication on issues related to division educational practice and procedures for teachers central office instructional and administrative personnel parents and community members.
  • Provides leadership and direction for adoption and implementation of instructional resources.
  • Leads in the development management evaluation and modification of programs to include curriculum and instruction for all preK-12 content areas as well as advanced academic programs instructional technology virtual learning and library services.
  • Recommends supervises and evaluates assigned personnel.
  • Works collaboratively with all Directors and Executive Cabinet Members to plan instructional programs.
  • Supervises and leads the curriculum writing process to ensure alignment with Standards of Learning objectives.
  • Plans short- and long-term objectives for office department and school division.
  • Leads the summer K-12 programs including their conception content communication registration and human resources function.
  • Leads various committees to meet the objective set forth in the strategic plan.
  • Executes action plans that support instructional programs.
  • Supports school leaders in the planning implementation and monitoring of priority areas as identified in the strategic plan.
  • Supports both local and state required school improvement processes.
  • Coordinates school staff allocation and scheduling process with principals to maximize instruction and school improvement.
  • Supports the implementation of division strategic priorities.
  • Leads the budget process for assigned personnel.
  • Provides instructional leadership and collaborates with school leadership to promote high quality instruction.
  • Attends School Board meetings to provide information and reports related to the division instructional programs as required.
  • Attends division regional and state meetings programs and events to support K- 12 instructional programs.
  • Maintains relevant webpages and social media applications.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director of Student Achievement.

Requisite Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of all aspects of standards based curriculum and instruction including reading instruction special education gifted education Fine Arts CTE and developing professional learning communities.
  • Possession of leadership skills qualities and personal characteristics necessary to work effectively with students teachers parents administrators and the general public.
  • Ability to manage fiscal and physical resources and to direct the operation of a broad range of activities in order to successfully carry out instructional support activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with staff students and citizens.
  • Ability to communicate school system policies and programs to the general public media and government officials.
  • Ability to communicate skillfully both orally and in writing including preparing complex reports making formal oral presentations and participating fluently in meetings.
  • Serve as role model.

Requisite Education and Experience:

  • Must possess a Masters Degree in Education School Administration or Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Must possess or be eligible a Virginia Postgraduate Professional Teaching License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK-12.
  • Must possess three (3) to five (5) years successful teaching experience.
  • Capable of short- and long-range planning.
  • Five (5) years of progressively more responsible job specific related experience in teaching and/or administration and supervision.
  • Experience as a building level principal or division leadership preferred.
  • Experience in developing standards-based curricula preferred.
  • Other combinations of applicable education training and experience which provide the knowledge abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see read talk hear handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as but not limited to: a personal computer calculator copier and fax machine. Significant climbing stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting grasping or repetitive motions required.
