Girl Effect is an international non-profit that creates media that girls want trust and need. From chatbots and chat shows to TV dramas and tech our content helps adolescent girls in Africa and Asia make choices and changes in their lives. We create safe spaces for girls to share facts and answer questions about health nutrition education and relationships empowering them with the skills to negotiate and redefine what is possible for a girl.
Our reach is 60 million and counting and we leverage technology to reach girls at scale so every girl can choose to be in control of her body health learning and livelihood. When a girl unlocks her power to make different choices that change her life it inspires others to do so too. She starts a ripple effect that impacts her family community and country. Context of the Role
We are seeking an experienced Safeguarding Manager to play a central role in advancing and embedding safeguarding across all areas of our global work. This role is key to our mission of creating safe inclusive and empowering environments for young people ensuring their voices are meaningfully integrated into the programmes and products we deliver.
As a Global Manager you will work in close collaboration with teams across programmes brand content digital partnerships and operations to champion a safeguarding -first mindset across Girl Effects culture systems and everyday practices. This is a role that blends strategic thinking with practical delivery shaping policies strengthening internal capacity and supporting teams to turn safeguarding principles into action. The ideal candidate will bring a solid grounding in safeguarding approaches a strong commitment to gender and social inclusion and experience working in diverse cross-cultural environments.
What Youll Do
Safeguarding
- Lead global safeguarding technical support for India and Tanzania (including matrix management of staff) with potential expansion to other regions collaborating with geo focal points and functional leads to embed safeguarding across programme design and delivery. This includes leading safeguarding support for the Kering Foundation and Mastercard
- Lead safeguarding efforts in Tanzania partnering with the local team to ensure practices align with global standards and are tailored to the local context.
- Co-lead the implementation contextualisation and monitoring of safeguarding policies and procedures at Girl Effect ensuring a culture that prioritises the safety and well-being of children and young people.
- Develop global guidance and systems that help staff confidently navigate safeguarding concerns that arise during programme delivery including activations and research activities.
- Collaborate with geo focal points and partners to ensure robust safeguarding checks agreements and risk assessments are in place.
- Design and facilitate partner/consultant safeguarding onboarding (e.g. production media research UX design companies) to ensure their work meets GE safeguarding requirements.
- Collaborate with the Director of Safeguarding to implement and strengthen digital safeguarding across online platforms products and events including developing and maintaining relevant digital safeguarding documentation and guidelines.
- Lead global Safeguarding inductions and provide contextualised capacity building to country teams ensuring they have the skills and confidence to deliver safeguarding measures and practices.
- Coordinate and oversee the response to disclosures of harm and abuse facilitating case management meetings to ensure sensitive cases are handled with care and documented accurately.
- Support with developing Board reports and where appropriate any serious incident reports.
Fundraising and Donor Engagement
- Co-lead donor due diligence processes ensuring compliance with safeguarding and standards.
- Collaborate with teams on proposal development and the preparation of donor reports.
- Represent Girl Effect in donor meetings providing technical expertise and updates on safeguarding initiatives as required.

Who You Are
- Knowledgeable and experienced in safeguarding approaches within international development programming ideally gained within India with understanding of application in other Girl Effect locations (i.e. Tanzania Kenya Ethiopia South Africa and Nigeria) being beneficial
- Experienced in developing and implementing organizational Safeguarding policies and procedures in an international development context
- A collaborative and inclusive team player who thrives in diverse cross-functional environments and values open transparent communication.
- A resilient and calm decision-maker able to maintain composure and lead effectively in high-pressure situations particularly when managing sensitive safeguarding issues.
- An excellent communicator with strong interpersonal writing and organisational skills and the ability to engage and influence diverse stakeholders.
- Fluency in English is essential; proficiency in Hindi is highly advantageous.
- Adaptable able to remain proactive and flexible when dealing with multiple priorities.
- A proactive learner continually seeking to expand knowledge of safeguarding and best practices and policies to stay ahead of emerging trends and challenges.
Qualifications and Experience
- A bachelors degree or higher in social work psychology child protection international development or a related field.
- Solid experience (at least 5 years) in safeguarding child protection or directly related fields.
- Expert knowledge of international safeguarding standards best practices and relevant legal frameworks.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing safeguarding policies tools and operating procedures.
- Strong experience in case management and risk assessments with an understanding of the complexities within international development.
- Experience designing and delivering impactful training initiatives for staff partners and young people in safeguarding practices.
