Job Summary

As an IT Technical Consultant Radio System you will be responsible for the effective maintenance support and continuous enhancement of Toronto Hydros radio infrastructure. This encompasses the administration of public safety voice systems SCADA data networks RF site operations and associated technologies including Motorola P25 and SmartZone platforms.

The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing technical processes performing system upgrades resolving performance issues and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards as defined by Innovation Science and Economic Development (ISED) Canada. The role also involves close collaboration with internal teams external vendors and subcontractors to maintain system performance and support operational needs including control center applications and mobile/portable radio programming.

This position requires advanced technical proficiency in RF instrumentation and methodologies site support systems and ITILaligned service management practices. The IT Technical Consultant is also expected to lead or contribute to strategic initiatives manage operational priorities and oversee support and maintenance agreements.

The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct policies and internal control procedures laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain and support Motorola P25 trunked/conventional radio systems and related infrastructure.
  • Monitor troubleshoot and resolve radio system performance and connectivity issues.
  • Perform upgrades configuration changes and firmware updates.
  • Collaborate with vendors technicians and internal teams to ensure system reliability.
  • Document system configurations maintenance activities and incidents.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and respond to outages.
  • Ensure compliance with Industry Canada regulations and standards.
  • Administer RF site operations and PMR network infrastructure.
  • Conduct system testing using RF instruments and methodologies.
  • Manage public safety voice systems (Motorola Astro 25) and SCADA data networks (GE MDS SD9 Orbit MOSCAD).
  • Support radio user applications and control center operations.
  • Maintain databases servers and communication links.
  • Oversee subcontractors and leases; liaise with legal and finance teams.
  • Provide programming and minor repairs for mobile/portable radios.
  • Travel to antenna sites for routine maintenance and incident response.
  • Lead or support special projects and manage daily priorities.
  • Administer support and maintenance contracts.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors degree (preferred) or Diploma (Electrical/Electronics Engineering Telecommunications/Communications Engineering and Computer Science preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with voice and data radio systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Motorola P25 and SmartNet/SmartZone systems.
  • Strong understanding of RF principles trunking simulcast and SCADA protocols.
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting site infrastructure including power distribution systems grounding practices and environmental controls.
  • Skilled in the use of RF tools such as spectrum analyzers service monitors and oscilloscopes.
  • Experience with Motorola radio equipment (XTL APX series) and Siemens RuggedCom switches (RX1500 RS401).
  • Familiarity with GENWatch PulseNet and voice recording systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting analytical and risk management capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates initiative adaptability and a proactive mindset.
