The Town of Brookline is seeking a detail-oriented Benefits Accountant to play a key role in supporting HR/Payroll operations across Town and School departments. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative data-driven environment and enjoys complex reconciliation audit work and process improvement related to employee benefit programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Reconcile Massachusetts Teachers Retirement System (MTRS) deductions and ensure accuracy of enrollments terminations and leave statuses.
- Partner with Payroll to support year-end accrual processing cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) and step increases.
- Conduct internal audits of benefit deductions across health dental life LTD and flexible spending programs.
- Manage long-term disability (LTD) payments and databases for School employees.
- Maintain and monitor Leave of Absence (LOA) and FMLA records ensuring proper billing and employee communication.
- Generate and issue benefits billing (COBRA survivor LOA furlough) and process related accounts receivable.
- Audit allocate and approve vendor invoices for benefit programs.
- Provide regular benefit deduction reports to HR Payroll and external vendors.
- Support process improvements within payroll/benefits accounting workflows.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in accounting finance or related field.
- Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in governmental or non-profit accounting including financial statement preparation/review and internal auditing; technical writing and/or training experience helpful; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong knowledge of UMAS GAAP and municipal financial procedures.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and familiarity with MUNIS Access and Crystal Reports.
- Ability to independently manage complex reconciliations with high accuracy.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work across departments.
Salary Range: $72883 - $82463 annualized with excellent benefits.
