The Office of Research and Environmental Safety (ORES) at Georgia State University is dedicated to supporting research and instructional laboratories animal facilities and environmental programs to ensure regulatory compliance guidance and best practices for the health and safety of our campuses and surrounding community. Within ORES the Biosafety Office staff and programs are essential to the operational backbone of the universitys research involving biological materials and compliance with the Federal Select Agent Program.

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

The essential duties and responsibilities of the Biosafety Specialist are the following:

  • Protocol Management System Administration:
    Maintains administrative operation of Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and the electronic protocol submission system. Processes committee protocol applications and other submissions. Communicates with investigators the Senior Biosafety Officer and the IBC Chair on submissions and requirements. Prepares meeting agendas minutes notices and other documents for committee review. Tracks Committee approvals expirations and all relevant regulatory and procedural requirements for compliance
  • Biosafety Protocol Review:

Assists with reviews of research proposals involving the use of biological material laboratory operations facilities and construction/renovation plans for all aspects of biosafety.

  • Laboratory Assessments:
    Performs annual laboratory assessments for biosafety compliance. Assists with identifying and evaluating occupational exposures.
  • Biosafety Training:
    Assists with developing and tracking biological safety training and educational programs.

Biomedical Waste:
Assists with biomedical waste disposal and associated record keeping

Minimum Hiring Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in microbiology biology public health or related field and one year of related experience. Must be able to wear and use appropriate protective equipment.

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:

  • Training or the ability to complete training in HAZWOPER (40 hours) within the first 6 months of hire.
