Organizational Context and Brief Project Description:

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the worlds largest humanitarian organization saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace stability and prosperity for people recovering from conflict disasters and the impact of climate change. WFP was awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace began its operations in China in 1979. Today we implement innovative pilot projects to enhance smallholder farmers livelihoods and improve preschool childrens nutrition while mobilizing resources to support vulnerable populations. Supervision induction and duty of care of UN Volunteers (Roles and Responsibilities of Host Entities)

UN Volunteers should be provided equal duty of care as extended to all host entity personnel. Host entity support to the UN Volunteer includes but is not limited to:

  • Introductory briefings about the organisation and office-related context including security emergency procedures good cultural practice and orientation to the local environment;
  • Support with arrival administration including setting-up of bank accounts residence permit applications and completion of other official processes as required by the host government or host entity;
  • Structured guidance mentoring and coaching by a supervisor including a clear workplan and performance appraisal;
  • Access to office space equipment IT support and any other systems and tools required to complete the objectives of the assignment including a host entity email address;
  • Access to shared host entity corporate knowledge training and learning;
  • Inclusion of the volunteer in emergency procedures such as evacuations;
  • Leave management;
  • DSA for official travel when applicable;
  • All changes in the Description of Assignment occurring between recruitment and arrival or during the assignment need to be formalized with the United Nations Volunteer Programme;
  • Investigate misconduct: sharing reports with the UNV;
  • Provide emergency assistance e.g. the death of volunteer or medical evacuation in collaboration with UNV. Accept letters of guarantees or potential liabilities for covering medical costs not claimable under medical insurance in extraordinary situations (e.g. isolation facilities services during pandemics)

Description of Tasks:

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Capacity and Knowledge Unit the National UN Youth Volunteer will:

  • Participate in event coordination and logistics. Support the planning organization and execution of workshops webinars and learning events to facilitate capacity-building and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Support knowledge platform management. Assist in the day-to-day maintenance and updates of theSouth-South Cooperation Knowledge Sharing PlatformandCloud Schoolto ensure smooth operation and user engagement.
  • Contribute to partnership development. Contribute to building and strengthening aknowledge partnership networkby engaging with stakeholders to foster collaboration and resource sharing.
  • Contribute to communication and advocacy. Support communication efforts to increase the visibility and impact of WFP Chinasknowledge-sharing and capacity-buildinginitiatives through content development social media and outreach activities.
  • Provide efficient administrative assistance includingscheduling correspondence document management and processing financial transactionsto ensure seamless unit operations.
  • Undertake other relevant tasks as assigned to support the units objectives.

Furthermore UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions results and opportunities.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites newsletters press releases etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/Expected Outputs:

The volunteer will contribute to the following outputs:

  • Event & Knowledge Support:Draft meeting summaries workshop reports and post-event documentation to capture key learnings and outcomes.
  • Knowledge Products:Assist in compiling and formatting capacity-building materials (e.g. training guides case studies) for the South-South Cooperation platform.
  • Engagement Materials:Prepare visually clear PowerPoint decks and briefs for webinars partner meetings and advocacy outreach.
  • Operational Assistance:Support event logistics scheduling and administrative tasks to ensure smooth unit operations.
  • Adaptable Collaboration:Complete ad hoc tasks tied to knowledge-sharing partnerships or unit priorities as needed.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Required Degree Level: Bachelors degree

Required Experience: 1 year

  • Education: Bachelors degree in economics International Development Studies Social Sciences Political Science or related field.
  • Experience: Fundamental understanding of project management and program operations. Prior experience with the UN agencies or international organizations will be considered an advantage.
  • Skills and competences: Good interpersonal networking and communication skills; computer skills (i.e. Word Excel PowerPoint social media and others); willingness to contribute and work as part of a team; adaptable learner with openness to new experiences; respect for diversity and adaptability to multi-cultural environment.
  • Performance Expectations: Consistent delivery of high-quality work within established deadlines; effective contribution to team objectives and organizational goals.

b) Language skills

Working knowledge of spoken and written communication in English and Chinese is required.

Learning expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteers assignment and take place before during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteers skills and competences improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteers motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

  • Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management problem solving team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills CV preparation job searching.
  • Inter-personal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural aware-ness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.
  • Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV WFP will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteers assignment. WFP will provide at its expense UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.

Living Conditions:

The national UN Volunteers duty station is situated in Beijing a city renowned as the paramount political and cultural epicenter of China. Beijing offers a well-developed public infrastructure alongside superior health care services.

In terms of housing while rental prices in central Beijing are on the higher side compared to the rest of the nation the living standards are correspondingly high. Beijing is well served by a multitude of shopping centers major supermarket chains and a wide array of international labels. Public transit is a cornerstone of urban mobility with buses and subways forming the backbone of transportation. Metered taxis are also abundant ensuring ease of travel within the city. Moreover both train and air travel are popular and convenient options for domestic and regional journeys.

17. Conditions of Service for National UN Youth Volunteers

The duration of your assignment is indicated above with the possibility of extension subject to availability of funding operational necessity and satisfactory performance. However there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment.

Travel to duty station (if applicable) and a Settling-In-Grant will be provided in the event the duty station is not within commuting distance from the place of recruitment. The applicable Volunteer Living Allowance is provided monthly to cover housing utilities and normal cost of living expenses. Life health and permanent disability insurance are included) and final repatriation (if applicable).

Furthermore in non-family duty stations that belong to hardship categories D or E as classified by theICSC a Well-Being Differential (WBD) on a monthly basis will be provided.
