About the role

As the Aboriginal Peer Worker in the new Alternatives to Emergency Department Service you will use your lived experience to provide holistic culturally sensitive support in a warm non-clinical setting connecting people in suicidal crisis with responsive care and vital community resources.

  • Provide psychosocial support safety/wellness planning peer support and advocacy

  • Collaborate with clients to identify and connect with desired support services

  • Demonstrate knowledge of local Aboriginal communities and engage them effectively

  • Liaise with emergency departments to link people to the service when necessary

  • Deliver support using step up/step down principles connecting to community or clinical care).

  • Shifts fall within Mon-Fri 8:00 AM4:30 PM Wed-Fri evenings and weekends. Increased pay for evening and weekend shifts

About you

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander

  • Lived experience of a suicidal crisis/attempt for you to use to provide meaningful peer support

  • Experience in community-based health or NSW Health Services and awareness of NSW Health policies

  • IPS and Cert IV in Mental Health Peer Work (Consumer) or willingness to attain within 18 months

  • Ability to apply person-centred recovery-oriented and trauma-informed principles

  • Understanding of the suicide prevention sector including crisis response and safety planning

  • Capacity to collaborate effectively with clients families/carers colleagues and stakeholders
