JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: District Nurse
REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent
LENGTH OF CONTRACT OR WORK YEAR: 9 months (187 days)
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Establishes a schedule for visits to schools.
- Assists in checking immunization records on grades as required by the State Department of Health and the Mississippi Department of Education.
- Reviews all health and developmental history on all kindergarten and first grade students entering school for the first time.
- Follows up on students with suspected health problems; makes home visits as necessary.
- Conducts conferences with teachers and/or parents as needed.
- Offers health counseling at all grade levels.
- Assists teachers principals and administrators in developing a school health program.
- Conducts school health programs of physical examinations hearing screenings and vision screenings.
- Provides and/or supervises care for students with special needs.
- Observes students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
- Instructs teachers on screening students for health defects.
- Reports to parents school personnel physicians clinics and other agencies on student health matters.
- Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
- Makes recommendations/referrals on health needs of individual students.
- Implements policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
- Participates in staff development programs.
- Completes other duties and assignments as requested by the supervisor.
- Maintains complete records on all school nurse activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Registered nurse.
- Current Mississippi license.
- Certified School Nurse.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in Public Health Nursing.
