Exceptional Childrens Teacher for the Hearing Impaired
Position Summary
Under general supervision the Exceptional Childrens Teacher for Hearing Impaired students provides specialized instruction and support in accordance with state and federal regulations. The teacher develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to promote academic social and emotional growth while ensuring that each student has equitable access to the general curriculum. This educator collaborates with families related service providers and school staff to create an inclusive environment that supports the unique needs of students with hearing impairments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement instructional plans aligned with each students IEP and district curricular goals.
- Provide direct instruction using evidence-based strategies and adapt materials to meet individual student needs.
- Utilize assistive technology and visual communication supports to maximize student access and engagement.
- Monitor and document student progress through data collection and ongoing assessments.
- Collaborate with general education teachers interpreters audiologists and other service providers to support student success.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and goals.
- Serve as case manager for assigned students ensuring compliance with all state and federal special education requirements.
- Maintain accurate records in accordance with NC Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities.
- Participate in professional development and stay current with best practices in deaf and hard-of-hearing education.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Strong understanding of instructional strategies for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Knowledge of special education laws IEP development and service delivery models.
- Proficiency in the use of assistive listening devices and other relevant technology.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with staff families and community partners.
- Understanding of human development learning differences and positive behavioral supports.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Special Education or related field from an accredited institution.
- North Carolina Teaching License in Hearing Impaired (K12) or eligibility for licensure.
- Valid North Carolina drivers license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing in educational settings.
- Familiarity with the Occupational Course of Study (OCS) curriculum.
- Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) and deaf culture.
