POSITION OVERVIEW:

Boston Public Schools Office of Instructional and Information Technology is seeking a certified and experienced Project Manager to establish and lead a portfolio of initiatives that modernize IT operations strengthen enterprise solutions and drive sustainable future-ready practices. Reporting directly to the Chief Technology Officer this new role will not only manage multiple concurrent projects but also design and implement project management frameworks tools and dashboards that establish the foundation for portfolio resource and project delivery across the department.

The ideal candidate combines technical mastery with a people-first mindsetstrategic yet adaptable able to balance structure with flexibility in a complex fast-moving environment. They build trust across diverse teams turn ambiguity into clarity and keep stakeholders engaged and informed. Most importantly they bring a working knowledge of IT in K-12 education environments are mission-driven and resilient and are committed to using technology as a lever to support teaching learning and equity for all students.

This role offers a unique opportunity to stand up the project management function in BPS IT gaining executive-level visibility and shaping how technology services are planned delivered and sustained across one of the nations largest urban school districts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project & Portfolio Leadership:

  • Launch and manage multiple IT transformation initiatives that modernize operations strengthen enterprise solutions and improve service delivery.
  • Establish a portfolio management practice to prioritize initiatives balance resources and monitor portfolio health.
  • Define project scope deliverables and success criteria to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery.

Frameworks Tools & Reporting:

  • Design and implement project management governance frameworks standards and processes for consistent execution.
  • Build and maintain dashboards that provide visibility into timelines dependencies resource allocation risks and portfolio performance.
  • Develop and maintain project charters schedules and documentation for clarity transparency and accountability.

Stakeholder Engagement & Change Management:

  • Partner with all IT units within the department as well as schools and other central departments to align goals and deliverables.
  • Lead change management strategies to drive adoption of new systems processes and enterprise practices.
  • Deliver clear and timely communications tailored to stakeholders at all levels including executive updates project status reports and portfolio briefings.

Risk & Performance Management:

  • Proactively identify assess and mitigate risks issues and dependencies that could affect scope schedule cost or quality.
  • Establish and track performance measures (KPIs OKRs SMART goals) to monitor project execution portfolio performance and organizational adoption.
  • Ensure accountability by maintaining transparent reporting and escalation processes.

Leadership & Continuous Improvement:

  • Coach and mentor team members to strengthen project management maturity across the department.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration accountability and continuous improvement in IT project delivery.
  • Capture and apply lessons learned refining processes to increase efficiency reduce risk and improve future outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS-REQUIRED:

  • Applicants must have at least (A) five (5) years of full-time professional experience in project management within information technology preferably involving large-scale multi-stakeholder initiatives or work in an educational setting. (B) At least one (1) year must have been in a supervisory managerial or lead project management capacity; or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below:
    • A current Project Management certification (e.g. PMP PRINCE2 PMI-ACP Scrum Master) may be substituted for one (1) year of the required (A) experience.
    • A Bachelors degree in Project Management Computer Science Information Technology Business Administration or a closely related field may be substituted for four (4) years of the required (A) experience.
  • Proven experience applying a full range of project management methodologies (Agile Waterfall Lean Scrum Kanban Six Sigma).
  • Fluency with project management platforms and collaboration tools (e.g. Google Workspace Smartsheet Asana) and ability to design dashboards for portfolio visibility.
  • Expertise in scope schedule risk and performance management with ability to define and track KPIs OKRs and SMART goals.
  • Exceptional written verbal and facilitation skills; able to translate technical issues into accessible information for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities: strategic thinker adaptable problem-solver collaborative team builder and effective communicator.

QUALIFICATIONS-PREFERRED:

  • Direct experience in K-12 education technology or public sector IT.
  • Demonstrated success in establishing or maturing a new project management function or leading large-scale organizational change initiatives.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders including educators administrators and central office leaders.
  • Mission-driven resilient collaborative and able to turn complexity into clear actionable plans that advance teaching learning and equity.
