Description
This position is responsible for operating construction equipment in support of the construction maintenance and repair of city streets and related infrastructure.
Major Duties
- Performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks in the construction and maintenance of the citys streets and storm sewer systems.
- Operates a variety of equipment in the construction maintenance and repair of streets bridges storm drains rights-of-way etc.
- Transports equipment and materials to and from work sites.
- Operates jet-vac truck bush hog dump truck trencher tractor jack hammer utility locators forklift chainsaw curb machine street sweepers knuckle boom truck mini excavator skid steer loader etc.
- Performs equipment maintenance and repair; maintains maintenance records; reports more complex maintenance or repair needs to supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and relevant federal state and local laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of public works construction.
- Knowledge of construction equipment operation and maintenance principles.
- Skill in planning organization and decision making.
- Skill in the operation of a variety of construction equipment.
- Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools.
- Skill in providing customer services.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Maintenance Construction Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include traffic laws city ordinances OSHA regulations FEMA regulations EPA regulations ALDOT guidelines construction specifications and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related equipment operation duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment in support of the construction repair and maintenance of city streets and other public works infrastructure. Successful performance contributes to a safe and well-maintained city infrastructure.

- Contacts are typically with co-workers other city personnel vendors representatives of other organizations and the public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information resolve problems and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting standing stooping bending crouching or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects climbs ladders uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity utilizes the sense of smell and must distinguish between shades of color.
- The work is typically performed outdoors in hot cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise dust dirt grease machinery with moving parts contagious or infectious diseases or irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks goggle or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED equivalent as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and
- Nine (9) months recent experience in the operation of equipment (ex. skid steer mini excavator tractor bush hog).
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT/PROMOTION/DEMOTION/TRANSFER
Employees are required to complete/sign the Certification & Condition of Employment/Promotion/Demotion /Transfer form(s). See condition(s) for details.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. (PBA 09/10/01)
- In an emergency and/or standby situation an employee in this position must be able to report to his/her regular workstation in a maximum of 30 minutes from the time of notification. (Sec. 2-30. (2) / PBA 1/9/95) This requirement must be met within six (6) months of employment/promotion /demotion/transfer. (See Condition for details.)
- An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal credit past employment and reference checks.
- Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 08/13/12).
- Must meet the City of Dothans employment physical standards which include drug/alcohol testing.
Application / Examination
Qualified applicants will be evaluated based on training and experience as documented on their application. This evaluation will comprise 40% of the final grade. The skills test will comprise the other 60% of the final grade.
The skills test for the position of Equipment Operator II (Public Works) is scheduled for October 28th or 29th 2025
Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will receive an email notification to self-schedule for the skills test. You MUST self-schedule online or you will not be allowed to take the test.
You will be allowed sixteen (16) minutes to complete two (2) stations. Plan to be at the testing site for a few hours.
