Work Schedule: Mon-Fri daytime hours. May require flexing to off hours or weekends occasionally as projects demand.

Working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist influences and adapts IT systems to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the medication use process.

Working collaboratively across a multi-disciplinary team responsibilities include project management analysis trouble shooting education/training of staff system maintenance and ensuring maximum functionality to enhance patient care and safety workflow assessment and optimization and pharmacy inventory management best practices.

Proactive awareness/management of medication charges and oversight of overall medication billing processes (HCPCS JW Modifiers denial investigation and prevention)

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions

1. Maintains the user experience for Medication management users in the clinical information systems.

  • Serves as a liaison between end users and IT

  • Supports data privacy confidentiality and security

  • and the inter-relationship between pharmacy and other clinical departments

  • Supports end users on site or remotely to investigate/trouble shoot and solve issues

  • Prepares/presents/distributes educational material as indicated

  • Prepares pharmacy related Knowledge Articles in the Service Now application to assist with first call resolution

  • Serves as a resource for Claim coders for all medication related questions.

    • Generate and work on hold/not released claims related to a question or issue on medications.

      • Review of all encounters in queue.

      • Facilitate needed order/documentation corrections by indicated staff.

      • Identify trends and re-designed workflow/system build to reduce the trend.

2. Coordinates and prioritizes with Pharmacy Informatics Coordinator pharmacy representatives and IT analysts to maintain clinical system via change requests and charge review.

  • Maintains appropriate charging controls

    • Wholesalers/distributors for price validation

    • HCPCS analysis

    • Monitor and problem solve errors

  • Designs adjustment to system based upon identified trends

    • Responsible for design and enhancement related to medications.

      • JW Modifier

      • Pending charge processing.

      • Maintenance of formulary settings related to charging.

    • Performs maintenance within the pharmnet formulary tool as defined within the agreement with the Meds Process team within IT.

    • Assists with Powerplan medication changes

    • Therapeutic interchanges new and modifications

  • Collects specifications for changes from end users

  • Supports end users and problem solves/investigates current EMR functionality as related to the medication process to include variance reporting and identification of safety and efficiency improvements

  • Processes all change requests to IT via established change control procedures

  • Assures open communication regarding change requests

  • Prepares/maintains change source documentation in accordance with auditor requirements Communicates to appropriate parties upon completion of work

  • Prepares/presents/distributes educational material as indicated upon completion of work

  • Develops and maintains skill set in database tools to facilitate daily review/work.

3. Project Management

  • Leads or collaborates in projects

  • Contributes to or leads design/development during projects related to medications

  • Works with minimal direction and supervision for assigned tasks

  • Competes assigned projects tasks according to established timeline

4. Tests application to assure appropriate functionality.

  • Tests new and enhanced applications/code for primary users

  • Develops and implements test plan/scripts

5. Maintains and keeps current knowledge of policy and regulations to enhance pharmacy informatics practice.

  • Has working knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements related to pharmacy and the inter-relationship between pharmacy and other clinical departments

  • Regular use of uCern Lights On Cerner Advance and Cerner Model Experience

Job Requirements

Education

  • Bachelors degree in health care related field or computer science or relevant equivalent work experience required.


Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years experience working in a pharmacy related role to include use of information system applications required.
  • Minimum of 5 years pharmacy product/medication purchasing experience required.
  • Project Management experience required.


License/Certifications

  • Registration with the State of Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services as a Pharmacy Technician (RPHT) required.
  • Certified by Nebraska Board approved state or national pharmacy technician certification program (CPHT) required.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of pharmacy practices and processes.
  • Extensive knowledge of information systems as it relates to pharmacy and the interrelationship between pharmacy and other hospital departments to troubleshoot define and resolve difficult EMR identified issues.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and disease processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Advanced computer literacy including proficiency in word documentation spreadsheets report generation and data management software programs.
  • Ability to work alone with minimal supervision or prompting.
  • Possesses knowledge of HCPCS and NDC requirements for pharmacy billing
  • Knowledge of statistics and mathematical aptitude to track and interpret performance measures
  • Ability to identify and analyze data to resolve user application problems that require interpersonal and organization skills in a self-directed manner.
  • Advanced project management skills with guidance of senior staff and/or management. Ability to map current and future workflows and identify gaps.
  • Ability to work outside the box to create innovative solutions to old work processes.
  • Ability to lead change management initiatives as identified.
