POSITION SPECIFICS
TheNews Labat Penn States Bellisario College of Communications is seeking a passionate and experiencedEditor and Training Coordinatorto join our growing team!
In this pivotal role youll work closely with ourLocal Reporting Cohort guiding student journalists frompitch to publicationand overseeing our innovativetraining and badging program. Youll play a key role in shaping the next generation of Pennsylvania journalists by mentoring students building industry partnerships and helping bridge classroom learning with real-world reporting.
About the News Lab
Launched in Fall 2022 the News Lab connects student journalists with professional newsrooms across Pennsylvania. Our students have published or broadcast work in over70 outlets includingThe Philadelphia InquirerPennLiveSpotlightPAWPSU andWVPB. Their work has earned prestigious recognition including:
- Pennsylvania Broadcast Association Excellence Award
- Press Club of Western PA Golden Quills
- SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards
- Multiple Hearst Award placements
We providepaid year-round journalism opportunitiesthat serve as both income sources and professional training groundswelcoming students from all majors with a focus on underclassmen.
Key Responsibilities
- Mentor student journalists through the full editorial processfrom story ideation to final publication or broadcast.
- Coordinate and enhance the News Labs training and badging program.
- Collaborate with the News Lab Director to execute strategic goals.
- Build and maintain relationships with professional news outlets across Pennsylvania.
- Support students during evening and weekend training sessions as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience ineditingoreditorial mentorship.
- Strongorganizationalandproject managementskills.
- Excellentwritten and verbal communicationabilities.
- Willingness to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience across multiple media formats (e.g. print/digital TV radio podcasting documentary).
- Advanced degree in journalism communications or a related field.
- Experience working with student journalists or in academic settings.
- Familiarity with thePennsylvania media landscapeand local reporting challenges.
- Awareness ofemerging journalism technologiesand industry trends.
- Background in managing training programs or professional development initiatives.
MINIMUM EDUCATION WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
Bachelors Degree 6 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: NoneBACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

SALARY & BENEFITS
The salary range for this position including all possible grades is $61800.00 - $89600.00.Salary Structure - Information on Penn States salary structure
