Your role:

We are looking to hire a Researcher for CBC Montreals morning show Daybreak. This is for a one-year replacement contract starting in January 2026.

You have fresh ideas and a desire to create high-quality programming Canadians have come to expect from us. You understand Montreals English-speaking communities and have a desire to connect with the audience.

As a Researcher you will attend story meetings and pitch interviews for the host of the radio show to conduct.

You will research and book interviews and prepare scripts and background information and supporting audio material for the producer and host.

You will fact-check the information.

You will also suggest innovative ways of conducting interviews.

You will help post interviews on other CBC platforms.

You will also work at maintaining a solid network of contacts in many communities in the Montreal region to ensure people from underrepresented communities have a voice on our show.

You may go out in the field to gather your interviews and sound and do live reports on air.

For reference purposes and at the time of this posting the Daybreak shift is Monday-Friday 9:30 am-5:30 pm in office.

Description of duties:

  • Be aware of and understand current events and stakeholders.
  • Be on time (for meetings delivering scripts making deadlines etc.)
  • Suggest concepts story ideas/angles and potential guests.
  • Research and select information ideas and written audio files
  • Keep up with community contacts and various sources.
  • Select music or sound for your features on air
  • Recommend and select guests. Conduct pre-interviews. Suggest interview questions approaches and scripts.
  • Follow up producer and host before and during the program.
  • Suggest intros as needed.
  • Provide logistical support (arrival time fee parking etc.) for guests correspondents and panelists. Inform them of the programs content and lineup.
  • Create and maintain files on upcoming news stories.
  • Package audio content from interviews for digital platforms
  • Record/edit interviews in Dalet
  • Work collaboratively with the team to ensure daily tasks are completed.
  • Carry out all other related tasks as needed.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or the equivalent.
  • Two years of work experience.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) and good knowledge of French.

Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of Montreal and surrounding areas.
  • Able to work independently and in a team.
  • Wide general knowledge.
  • Able to develop digital treatments for stories.
  • Strong on-air presence.
  • A keen interest in local radio and radio storytelling.
  • A general understanding of political structures and organizations in the greater Montreal region and the province of Quebec.
  • Excellent knowledge of research tools and techniques.
  • Knowledge of interview techniques.
  • Able to analyze synthesize and think critically.
  • Able to discuss a topic clearly.
  • Must be able to make daily deadlines.
