Join Union Sanitary District and keep the vehicles and heavy equipment that protect local water quality running safely and reliably. Youll independently diagnose repair and maintain a diverse fleetlight/medium/heavy gas/diesel/hybrid/EVin a collaborative shop that champions safety. Youll have the autonomy to perform journey-level work in a clean supportive shop with up-to-date equipment. All tools are District-supplied so you can focus on the worknot your toolbox.
Examples of Duties
What Youll Do
- Maintain diagnose and repair engines drivetrains cooling/HVAC brakes wheels/tires and steering/suspension across gas/diesel/hybrid/EV.
- Perform electrical diagnostics/repairs (low/high voltage starters/alternators batteries sensors/lighting) using scan tools and diagnostic computers.
- Service powertrains and driveline components (fluids u-joints clutches differentials transmissions).
- Work on hydraulics/pneumatics and specialty equipmentfrom routine maintenance to complex overhauls.
- Fabricate/modify equipment (mounts lighting brackets); basic welding/soldering and light body work.
- Conduct inspections (e.g. CHP BIT); support emissions compliance recalls and testing.
- Operate/help manage the fleet fuel system; clean fuel and ready vehicles.
- Use hoists/lifts forklifts/cranes and safe rigging; respond to field/emergency repairs.
- Keep accurate records; estimate labor/parts; order and maintain stock.

Qualifications
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; one year technical/vocational coursework in automotive/equipment trades.
- 2 years journey-level maintenance/repair experience.
- Technical & tools: From routine service to complex diagnostics/overhauls across gas/diesel/hybrid/EV; proficient with hand/power tools precision instruments and scan/diagnostic equipment; read drawings/specs; shop math; LOTO/safe work practices; rigging/hoists/forklifts; basic welding/cutting/fabrication; estimates/recordkeeping; safe vehicle operation; familiarity with diesel and co-gen equipment.
- Judgment & teamwork: Clear English communication; strong troubleshooting logic initiative and customer service; collaborates well; at II level mentors and coordinates work.
- Licensing: Valid CA Class C with clean record; obtain CA Class A with tank endorsement within one (1) year of appointment.
- Certs: ASE certifications are highly desirable.
Working Conditions
- Lift up to 50 lbs; perform strenuous work for extended periods.
- Work with equipment that may contact raw sewage; outdoors in varied weather; overtime as needed.
