Responsibilities

Job Summary:

The Simulation Director is a leadership role within Graduate Medical Education (GME) at St. Josephs Medical Center. This individual serves as the Division Director for the Simulation and Medical Education Division of GME and as the Program Director for all Simulation Education across GME Residency and Fellowship Programs. The Simulation Director holds responsibility authority and accountability for the administration and operations of the simulation division teaching and scholarly activities and the education and evaluation of residents and fellows during simulation didactics events (including MCI) and electives. The Simulation Division Director also oversees the SIM Fellowship Director the Simulation and Medical Education Fellowship and the coursework of the SIM fellowship.

Core Responsibilities:

Education

  • Design develop and implement engaging and immersive simulation curricula across all residency and fellowship programs. This includes content and materials for high-fidelity simulation standardized patient cases and surgical and procedural skills training curriculum for medical students nursing students residents graduate nurses attendings staff nurses and other ancillary staff.
  • Apply national standards and evidence-based medical principles to all programs in Simulation and practical medical education activities involving all residents fellows faculty and ancillary staff.
  • Provide strategies for conducting targeted needs assessments for individual programs based on core content emerging evidence-based medicine (EMB) individual resident needs and individualized learning plans.
  • Develop outcome measurements and evaluate all educational simulation activities for quality assurance purposes.
  • Assist in the design development and implementation of specific skills-based training required for educating students and credentialing residents and/or attendings.
  • Participate as a simulation-based educational expert in curriculum review.
  • Plan implement and teach faculty development programs relevant to simulation education and track outcomes of programs and projects.
  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of simulation-based inter-professional educational activities as directed.
  • Participate on committees related to curriculum design and/or performance assessment from the perspective of simulation.
  • Proactively work with course/clerkship directors nursing educational leaders GME program directors and hospital/health system administrators to stimulate the utilization of simulation for clinical education and competency assessment.

Quality Assurance and Data Analysis:

  • Assist with the design and written proposals for educational research projects or scholarly activities.
  • Develop data collection tools.
  • Help coordinate data collection and analysis of outcomes.
  • Assist with the implementation and performance of Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement (QA/QI) and research projects as appropriate.
  • Recognize and troubleshoot flaws in study design.
  • Assist with the completion of Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications and monitoring of adherence to compliance processes.
  • Assist with the creation of research/scholarly related reports and presentations for various audiences.

Growth and Planning:

  • Participate in strategic planning for the expansion and growth of the Simulation Center including equipment/needs and recruitment of SIM-trained faculty.
  • Participate in philanthropic and community engagement to secure financial support for the Simulation Center and GME educational endeavors.
  • Work in close collaboration with the SIM Manager to manage the SIM programs budget resources and scheduling.
  • The Simulation Director will report to the DIO/Director of Academic Affairs.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • MD or DO current board certification in primary field and active unrestricted California Medical License.
  • SIMulation fellowship training or 5 years equivalent experience in academic field.

Ongoing Maintenance of Expertise:

  • Will stay current with developments in simulation technology and learning theories.
  • Attain and maintain accreditation in relevant organizations as applicable (e.g. Society for Simulation Healthcare).
