Colorado Veterans Community Living Center (VCLC) at Fitzsimons is a beautiful 180-bed skilled nursing facility serving Colorados veterans. We strive to honor and respect those living in our community through companionship and person-centered care while providing a comfortable and safe place to live. At Fitzsimons we provide long-term care and short-term rehab and have a secured memory care neighborhood. We are conveniently located on the medical campus with UC Hospital and the Aurora VA Medical Center. Fitzsimons celebrates a low 14% staff turnover rate and substantial longevity among staff.

Description of Job


As a Pharmacy Technician you will perform day-to-day professional pharmaceutical operations of the department which includes drug acquisition distribution and monitoring identifying resolving and preventing drug-related problems that may affect optimal resident care outcomes and researching and communicating with our medical and nursing staff as well as all ancillary services. The Pharmacy Technician position will assist the Pharmacists with filling and compounding delivery and shipping drug procurement billing filing and auditing activities.

Additionally as a Pharmacy Technician II you can expect to:

  • Under the direction of a Pharmacist the position fills and distributes prescriptions to the different neighborhoods for residents. Once the pharmacist approves the prescription(s) the position bills the insurance company
  • Orders medication stock to ensure par levels are maintained and controls inventory costs packages medications mixes intravenous solutions fills refills prices and labels prescriptions and faxes refill requests. Process refills into the computer and associated insurance billing
  • Maintains inventory of drugs chemicals or other controlled substances and helps to ensure their security. Prices prescriptions inputs resident information into the computer. Resident data includes such data as resident name prescribed medication and cost to maintain pharmacy files insurance system and inventory
  • Answers phone calls and handles those duties that dont require a licensed pharmacist including problem-solving
  • Retrieves corrects or deletes previously entered data where necessary
  • Reconciles insurance payments with resident billings
  • Maintain attention to the residents needs and protect the safety of the resident
  • Anticipate future needs and or problems of residents and take action to meet these needs
  • Prepares and organizes medications to be delivered to in-house nursing stations or remote facilities via the shipping process. Maintains pharmacy devices including but not limited to fax machines automated dispensing systems medication carts glove box units aseptic techniques of countertops and dispensing stations
  • Cleans sterilizes and or disinfects areas and/or equipment
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications Substitutions Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Special Qualifications:

  • Must have Pharmacy Technician certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or ExCPT (Examination for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians) Certification
Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:

  • Current valid certification or provisional certification as a Pharmacy Technician from the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy
AND

  • Two (2) years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Knowledge of basic pharmacy practices and procedures
  • Retail Pharmacy or Long Term Care Pharmacy experience preferred

  • Current/Valid and unrestricted US Drivers License
  • May have to transport medications to other VCLC facilities in state vehicles
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose the information on the application and provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position. Absent extraordinary circumstances prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.
