Job Description

OPD is seeking an experienced professional to lead our Legal Assistant Division.

The Orleans Public Defenders Office provides holistic community-based representation in New Orleans. We represent thousands of people each year utilizing a client-centered team model that puts the client first and takes a 360-degree approach to our advocacy and representation. We recognize our clients are unique individuals and work to address their needs both in the court and out. JOB DUTIES:

The Legal Assistants Supervisor oversees a key component of OPDs client-centered representation through data management information coordination and robust administration and case documentation. The primary role of the Legal Assistant Supervisor is to strengthen the Legal Assistant Division and ensure the daily administrative needs for the Trial Division are effectively and efficiently met to support the critical work of representing clients. oversee and strengthen our Legal Assistant division which provides the daily administrative functions for OPDs attorneys and their critical work of representing clients. The candidate we seek is relentless data-driven and a detail-oriented dynamic leader.

Under the supervision of the Deputy Chief Defender the Legal Assistant Supervisor will maintain and expand open communications with New Orleans Criminal District Court Municipal and Traffic Court Juvenile Court and other criminal justice agencies as well as overseeing and executing systems improvements both internally and in partnership with other agencies.

More specifically the Legal Assistant Supervisor duties include:

  • Case Management Oversight: Ensure the legal assistant team maintains accurate case intake case assignment case accounting and a consistent electronic and physical filing system. Ensure OPDs case management systems are functioning properly to support client teams.
  • Docket Creation and Production: Oversee team production of accurate and timely daily dockets for attorneys as well as necessary administrative support and case assignments in court.
  • Training and Leadership Establish effective training and guidance through change new systems procedures operational efficiencies and best practices. Work with Leadership evaluators city and legal system actors to evaluate redesign and implement administrative systems and operational processes.
  • Management Expertise: Be comfortable working with the team to improve efficiency and accuracy of work while providing individualized supervision tailored to different learning and feedback styles.
  • Collaboration and Culture: Create a culture of mutual support continuous improvement problem solving and excellent customer service within the team. Contribute to a welcoming mission-driven office culture built on mutual support learning and humility.
  • Professional Obligations:Maintain confidentiality and high ethical standards. Contribute to the welcoming collaborative and supportive environment that OPD seeks to foster.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3years of professional experience either in a public defender law government or non-profit office or relevant administrative experience as well as at
  • At least 3 years of team/people management or direct supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills that will help manage a division.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities. Able to produce consistent accurate case accounting and data. Knowledgeable in using data to guide decisions constantly seeking ways to refine and enhance the work.
  • Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to receive and provide feedback to ensure high quality work.
  • Excellent customer service mindset.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.

COMPENSATION:

This is a full-time position with competitive salary and benefits. The positions salary range is $56500-$83500 with the starting salary commensurate with experience and skills.
