Student Employment Opportunity:PASS Program Lecture Tutor


**This position is for current Palmer College of Chiropractic students only.

Palmers PASS Program is currently hiring a student worker to serve as a Lecture Tutor for the Fall term. We are looking to fill a PASS Lecture Tutor position for Neuroanatomy II (PNS) and welcome applications from qualified students interested in supporting their peers.

Function:

PASS tutors are motivated to help their peers be successful by learning how to learn and provide peer academic support to students in a variety of courses in turn helping to shape students experience at Palmer College of Chiropractic. The Palmer Academic Support Services (PASS) Lecture Tutor is responsible for providing Palmer students supplemental group lecture sessions in D.C. academic courses. PASS Lecture Tutors review not only the content area of the course but also present learning strategies and test preparation techniques. Students selected as Lecture Tutors must meet and maintain certain qualifications to be part of the PASS program and are considered employees of the department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Attend the mandatory New Tutor Orientation at the beginning of employment.

Tutors will attend meetings periodically as a team and individually with the Coordinator of the PASS program and/or director of Academic Support Services.

Tutors contract for a specific number of hours per trimester based upon their schedule and availability. Any notable change in the number of hours worked or the times the hours are scheduled are to be discussed with the PASS Program Coordinator prior to making adjustments.

As a Federal Work Study student Lecture Tutors must submit accurate timesheets that comply with policies and procedures of Financial Planning and Academic Support Services and will be paid for hours scheduled or approved by the PASS Program Coordinator. All work study students are expected to act and treat their position as an employee of the college. Falsifying information related to a work-study position will result in permanent termination from the program and charges of misconduct may be filed under the Code of Student Ethics.

Tutors are expected to arrive at their scheduled tutorial sessions prepared and on time. If a tutor must cancel a session the PASS Program Coordinator should be contacted in advance so an announcement may be made to the class for which the tutorial supports or a cancellation notice can be posted prior to the session.

Tutors are expected to work collaboratively with faculty members whose course they are supporting. It is mandatory that tutors maintain consistent communication with faculty to ensure the tutorial sessions closely correspond to what the faculty member has presented and emphasized in class.

Lecture Tutors are to provide a 50-minute tutorial session per week regardless of number of students in attendance. This will be a group tutorial session pertaining to the specific course material.

Tutors focus on clarifying reviewing enhancing and reinforcing students learning. Tutors aid with course content study skills note taking time management orientation and test taking skills.

Tutor should NOT present new-uncovered material to the students.

Tutors are expected to maintain and submit accurate attendance lists for all tutorial sessions. This list will be provided at the beginning of the term for the extent of the term and is required to be updated weekly.

All information in the PASS program attendance sheet and information provided by students to PASS Lecture Tutors are confidential under FERPA. The PASS tutor may not share personal information pertaining to a student with anyone other than the Student Support Services department. A breach in confidentiality will result in dismissal from the program and ethics charges will be filed.

Qualifications:

Tutors will be model academic students; with a minimum of 3.0 G.P.A. and have good basic study habits. Final grades below 3.0 in any trimester will be grounds for PASS Lecture Tutor dismissal. Tutors must meet the college academic standards and a tutor on academic probation is not eligible to work.

A minimum B grade must be achieved in the course that the student desires to tutor addition the prospective tutor should obtain the approval of the course instructor in writing.

Have successfully completed at minimum the first two trimesters going into the third with a 3.0 G.P.A

Collaboration/Teamwork: Able to work productively within a team structure and identify and manage group dynamics.

Tutors will be able to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.

Tutors will serve as a role model for students.

Communication: Articulate thoughts and concepts clearly and effectively in written and oral form in addition to demonstrating proficient speaking and listening skills.

  2. Actively listen to and answer questions during tutorial sessions.

Critical Thinking/Problem Solving: Exercise sound reasoning to analyze issues make decisions and overcome problems.

  1. Help students learn how to learn the material.
  2. Help students refine study skills and become independent learners.

Tutors will engage in ethical behavior according to policy and personal values.

Tutors will demonstrate personal accountability and effective work habits (e.g. punctuality working productively with others organizational and time management skills).

Tutors will complete all attendance on time along with other required tutoring database entries.

Formative and summative evaluations will be conducted for all tutorial sessions toward the end of the trimester and/or as needed. Tutors will receive a letter of extension of employment or dismissal at the end of each trimester. When a letter of extension is received tutors will need to submit an updated schedule and hours requested if they choose to continue tutoring.

Disclaimer: A students length of participation in the Student Employment Program will be from the date of hire until termination either by student supervisor or Office of Financial Planning and not to exceed the students enrollment at Palmer College of Chiropractic.
